Some titles down to $5 (THE SCARLET LETTER one of those) in a solid looking sale --

I'm a Kino newbie because here in Canada their releases are quite expensive. So I don't have many.

However, I finally signed up to the Kino site, and I've been studiously mining the While Supplies Last sale for the last couple of months.

Figures in a Landscape $11.99
A Lady Takes a Chance $7.99
Manhandled $8.99
Becky Sharp $8.99
For Love of Ivy $5.99
Stage Struck $9.99
Lovers and Other Strangers $5.99
The Covered Wagon $5.99
Invitation to a Gunfighter $6.49
You Never Know Women $5.99
Old Ironsides $4.99
A Woman's Devotion $5.99
Beggars of Life $9.99
The Wonderful Country $9.99
Papa's Delicate Condition $4.99
Lisbon $7.99
Target: Harry $5.99
The Last Command $5.99 (Max Steiner score!)
Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came? $4.99
Pursuit $4.99 (Jerry Goldsmith score!)

Eleni $5.99
Smashing Time $4.99
Zaza $10.99
Gunfight at Dodge City $9.99
Sunset in the West (1950) $7.99
Trigger, Jr. $5.49
Juggernaut $11.99
Steaming $7.99
Special Delivery $7.99
Young Billy Young $4.99
Singing Guns $6.99
The High Commissioner - aka Nobody Runs Forever $5.99

I, Jane Doe $5.49
The Secret Invasion $7.49
What's New Pussycat $8.49
Tiger by the Tail $5.99
Queen of Blood $11.99
Barquero $11.99
Driftwood $7.99
Young Savages $4.99
The Onion Field $9.99

Topkapi $7.99
Cannon For Cordoba $7.99
Bloody Mama $7.99
El Paso $8.99
Dimension 5 $9.99
At War with the Army $7.49
Don't Give Up the Ship $6.99
Missouri Breaks $11.99
The Honey Pot $5.99
Marjorie Morningstar $7.99
Heart of Midnight $9.99
Ring of Bright Water $5.99
Report to the Commissioner $9.99
Hidden Agenda $4.99
War-Gods of the Deep $11.99
Harry in Your Pocket $9.99

The only one left to get is Busting! :D

Its fun seeing these movies - all blind buys. I bought the OOP Man with the Gun separately because I just missed it in the sale and was delighted to hear an Alex North score I had never heard of before. (That main title was a "Huh?" moment for me.)

Now so much regular stock is on sale, I have a huge wish list. Even my 'essentials' list is long. Luckily, the sale lasts the month and the releases are not supposed to go out of stock, so I can take my time making up an order.

Awesome job sprocket! Between the two sales going on simultaneously this is one of the best times ever to score some deep deals on KL titles. The best part is, like you said, they're so cheap you can take a chance on all kinds of titles as blind buys and not worry if the movie doesn't work out.

Yep, did that deliberately with the Republic Pictures releases, especially.

In building my next order, I'm looking at buying movies with 'unreleased' scores like Joan of Arc (Friedhofer) and Kiss the Blood off my Hands (Rozsa).

It's all very interesting. :)

I cleaned out everything I wanted from them months ago and frankly next to none of their new releases or announcements over the last six months or so have interested me. And I'm still smarting from how I made three blind buys that turned out to be bad viewing overall.

Be careful of the end of RING OF BRIGHT WATER if you haven't seen it before, Sprocket.

Warner Archive is having their 4 for 44 sale also. I picked up a few I had been eyeing and couldn't resist for 11 bucks each!

Curse of Frankenstein
Horror of Dracula
Mr. Roberts
The Man Who Would be King.

Heard that before! :)

Ended up getting Busting from another source as it just went OOP (also picked up OOP Dr. Goldfoot And The Girl Bombs). I don't have very high expectations for either but one doesn't live on caviar alone.

Also picked up Boy on a Dolphin: now there I have expectations. :D

Still finalizing my big Kino order. I'm wondering whether to drop stuff like The Lion in Winter and One Million Years, B.C. and concentrate on more obscure stuff like Diva, Attack! - or - Curse of the Undead??!

I would just buy them all. If you're like me, in a few months you'll be waiting for the next sale to grab the ones you passed this time.

A lot of those blind-buys are either in genres I like, by filmmakers I respect, or are else on the verge of going OOP. Considering I skipped the last major Kino sale late last year, I figured I'd make up for lost time. 8)

Okay, I'll admit that Susannah Hoffs in a cheesy 80s T&A romp was hard to resist. :D  That and Losin' It just for the amusement factor of a movie that Tom Cruise flat-out refuses to discuss whenever it's brought up in interviews (plus, early Curtis Hanson). For these prices, I don't even mind if some of the movies turn out to be dogs...I can always flip them on the secondary market and make most or all of what I paid for them back. Kino is always the best "blind buy" label, because there's so little to lose when you're paying generally ten bucks or less during sale periods. (plus zero in S&H and taxes). Meanwhile, I'll buy three "sale-priced" Twilight Time releases, and it'll set me back $60...BEFORE shipping adds another eight bucks. :?:

Absolutely. And you'll probably find THE ALLNIGHTER as dull as I did, but hey, she's cute so why not go for it?

I really like THE RIVER. Outside of Mel kind of being miscast there -- he's too stern and was probably a little too young, and I've always felt he would've played the role differently a few years later -- it has that warm Americana feel typical of Mark Rydell's work. It feels like a real family in a real, believable dramatic situation. Cinematography and Williams' score are tops.

It's not a "classic" -- but it's a movie I find repeated value in watching.

After much humming and hawing, I made my order tonight:

Taras Bulba $9.99
The Man Who Haunted Himself $9.99
The House on Carroll Street $9.99
Pray for the Wildcats $9.99
Nothing Sacred $7.99
The Spiral Staircase $9.99
Desert Fury $9.99
Avanti $9.99
Never Steal Anything Small $9.99
Rawhide (1951) $9.99
The War Lord $9.99
A Foreign Affair $9.99
Joan of Arc (70th Anniversary) $9.99
Kiss the Blood off My Hands $9.99
Time Limit $9.99
The Naked Face $4.99
Cops and Robbers $4.99
The Rover $5.49
Unstrung Heroes $5.49
Mumford $5.99

In the end it was a mix of films, with scores by composers I was interested in, Roger Moore movies(!), While Supplies Last disks and just plain cheap releases.

There's a real bounty of great film composer work in the KL catalogue. Not like the film music desert of the present.
