Re: INDIANA JONES & THE DIAL OF DESTINY - Andy's Review
When did movie studios start thinking what we wanted from our childhood heroes was to see them old, broken, miserable failures? Half the reason why Top Gun: Maverick went through the roof at the box office was because Tom Cruise was still portrayed as...well, top gun. He had his late-middle-aged regrets, sure, but he wasn't portrayed as a complete and utter loser. And he got to exit that film on the top of the world, to cheers and self-satisfaction that he had put his handful of demons to rest, instead of Han Solo (literally stabbed through the heart by his traitorous son), Luke Skywalker (a bitter recluse living alone on an island), James Bond (allowing himself to get blown up by a million missiles because he couldn't be with the child he had only known existed for...what, two days?) and Indiana Jones (divorced, dead son, cut loose from his job with nothing but a crummy clock he gives away to a random guy on the street). I swear to God, if Ethan Hunt gets killed at the end of the eighth Mission: Impossible...

Well wouldn't that bring MI full circle since they started off with "Jim Phelps" as a traitor?Monterey Jack wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 12:11 pm When did movie studios start thinking what we wanted from our childhood heroes was to see them old, broken, miserable failures? But I do agree with the basic point. It seems like every beloved franchise is now getting the "Jaws-The Revenge" treatment now.

This is the kind of nauseating "Disney defender" take...the whole "its YOUR fault!!"...that you see corporate media shills wanting out there. Idiots like this can't ever acknowledge that no, stupid, it's the PRODUCT that's the problem.
And these Disney products are not "pieces of art". Sorry.

Re: INDIANA JONES & THE DIAL OF DESTINY - Andy's Review
Nearly a full week and couldn't hit $100 million. For this kind of corporate Disney blockbuster costing 3X that amount -- yeah, it's a disaster.
Nearly beaten yesterday by INSIDIOUS' previews (which started shows after 4pm)

Sony/Stage 6 Films/Blumhouse’s fifthquel Insidious: The Red Door nearly locked out Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny yesterday at the box office. The Patrick Wilson starring and directed PG-13 horror film scared up $5M in previews at 2,806 locations that began showtimes at 4PM. That amount of money is very close to what Indy grossed, early estimates showing around $5.2M for the day in an awful week that ended at $94.5M for the $300M-plus grossing Disney/Lucasfilm finale sequel. Insidious is being with women under 25, Indiana Jones with older men.

This is when you get the honesty -- even though the movie is still in theaters, Karen Allen voicing her general displeasure over DIAL OF DESTINY. She took the $$, but obviously she knows it was crap.
Something tells me Ford will admit as much once the film is done theatrically.

Shades of Shia badmouthing Crystal Skull, but at least there, he waited a few years. The fact that Allen is doing this barely a week after the movie opened (and totally spoiling her "surprise" appearance in the process) proves what a write-off this is. Like I said before, this will turn out to be the A Good Day To Die Hard or Rambo: Last Blood of the Indy franchise, a lame-duck fifth entry that sends off a beloved screen hero on the worst note possible.

Funny thing is it wasn't only her spoiling it, Disney's been advertising her character on social media too. After a few days, they must've wanted to get the word out she was in it, as a desperate sign of good will for the fans who were already bailing.

Amazing perspective of how many more tickets were sold for TEMPLE OF DOOM than this movie:

Final tally looks certain to fall short of $400 mil worldwide.
That's a complete and total flop. Crystal Skull did just shy of $800 mil worldwide years ago, unadjusted for inflation.
