Kino Lorber October Sale

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

About 800 sale titles, some real cheap, some others not reduced in this sale (i.e. some of the Disney titles) since I assume they're low on copies and don't need to unload the rest of their stock.

I think you'll like this one. Not quite one of the all time best "so bad it's good" movies but definitely has its moments, especially the final confrontation.

Picked up a bunch from a local Canadian distributor which was matching prices (in some cases slightly cheaper).

Slightly different selection than what I would have bought from Kino directly.

Blue Panther aka Marie-Chantal vs. Doctor Kha
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
SHENANDOAH
STRANGER ON THE RUN
DEATH RIDES A HORSE
PRIME CUT
LAND UNKNOWN, THE
GREEN MAN, THE
ARISE, MY LOVE
Arabesque
WIDOW COUDERC, THE -AKA- LE VEUVE COUDERC (couldn't be bothered to see what exactly this was about  )
PLAINSMAN, THE
FEAR NO EVIL / RITUAL OF EVIL (DOUBLE FEATURE)
JUNIOR BONNER
FITZWILLY
FOUR FRIGHTENED PEOPLE

Got my package today. The teeth were broken out of the case of the Blackmail Blu, but I have replacement cases out the wazoo.

I grabbed...

Le Professional
Clockwise
The Ipcress File
The Lion in Winter

I already had the Studio Canal region B Lion in Winter but assumed Kino Lorber's would be an improved transfer. I see no difference, and the sound track has the same noise reduction compression as the Studio Canal (and sounds like a low-quality mp3 in the quieter moments).

Yeah I covered this back in my 2018 review:

https://andyfilm.com/2018/03/15/3-20-18 ... revisited/

The only worldwide restoration is Studio Canal's 2016 master and Kino licensed the same source. In fact there was a rumor Criterion was going to release it back in the day but they passed when they saw the SC master.

The sound source is also problematic like you said Paul, though I thought KL added some equalization on their tracks that made it slightly more acceptable than SC's Blu which became so jarringly loud at times you had to reach for the volume to control the wild disparity between softness and the track's coarser sections.

It's really a title that is in need of a proper restoration but it's controlled by Studio Canal worldwide so there's not much anyone can do unless they opt to give it another pass. Or let someone like Criterion or Arrow get ahold of it. :(

Some of those SC restorations are better than others too. For example their FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD has a much better UK source and master than the Warner Archive US release, which originated from the MGM archives (movie was owned by MGM in the US but Anglo-Amalgamated in the UK so they had different source materials for the UK Blu). It's missing a few seconds of cockfighting (no vital loss!) but otherwise it's superior to the US transfer.

There is noticeably more high end on the KL Blu-ray than on the SC disc, so the eq was definitely tweaked. Not sure if it's an improvement tho -- I'd have to sample more of the disc to make a determination.

For me it was a very mild improvement. As memory serves I found the volume fluctuation more irritating in the SC release, though very clearly there was only so much that could be done with the source. I don't remember either but the 5.1 might be more palatable, I haven't watched it in a while.

Either way it's basically the same presentation. Really needs a better remaster.
