Weekend Box Office 4/24 - A Quick Look at What's Making Money

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Just a drop-in to show really the only things making money remain kid-cartoons, stuff like SONIC 2, and super-hero movies (not named MORBIUS). That's the way it's probably going to remain, but Hollywood may be fine with that paradigm, since it means movies can play in theaters exclusively for a set amount of time (like THE NORTHMAN, 17 day period) before moving to "on-demand" for a set amount of time, before moving to things like Vudu, then streaming services.

So it's like some people could buy/rent a movie multiple times, which is attractive to the studios. The issue is whether or not theater owners will be happy with that kind of formula, when nobody is showing up to THE NORTHMAN or the Nicolas Cage film, FATHER STU, THE AMBULANCE, etc. Not that any of them are GREAT movies that people need to see, per se, but these are films adults aren't motivated to go out and see. Once you get people used to home theater and the availability of first-run product at home -- that genie is impossible to put back in the bottle, especially where this audience segment is concerned.
