I thought that the first Thor definitely slotted in nicely with Kenneth Branagh's filmography (with its Shakespearean power plays and constant dutch angles). Yet ever since, Disney's been scooping up indie favorites like Ryan Coogler and Chloe Zhao, and yet their movies looked and felt EXACTLY like movies made by anyone else in the MCU. Zero auteurist personality. Long gone are the days when Tim Burton would be given carte blanche to make a movie as fascinating and perverse (and rife with the director's narrative and visual quirks) as Batman Returns.

For the MCU, it's all over but the grousing at this point. I seriously doubt even teaming up Deadpool & Wolverine this summer is going to re-galvanize anyone's interest in a truly moribund genre.

Indeed, it will be somewhat interesting to see if DEADPOOL still has the same juice it had before COVID, or if its a joke that's worn out its welcome. Obviously the MCU is ripe for the ribbing at this stage, but it'll obviously depend on how far they take it (or Disney allows them to).

Even if it succeeds, it's not really evidence that "audiences are BACK for comic book movies!" though...
Reynolds' quips cast a wider, R-rated net with adult audiences as opposed to "MCU" movies. To some extent they are not the same audience.

This was always the difference between Disney Marvel and Fox Marvel...the latter was allowed to be rougher, friskier, and allowed more directorial expression. Now that "Fox" has ceased to exist, I fear Deadpool is gonna get watered down for the kiddies. Yeah, it's still gonna be R-rated (and I'm sure Reynolds will throw some snark Disney's way about their recent spate of flops), but Disney's out of their MINDS if they think an R-rated superhero movie will make a billion worldwide (and they desperately need to get a billion-dollar success if they're not gonna listen to reason and start curtailing wildly out-of-control budgets). The previous two couldn't crack $800 million, and at least they had reasonable budgets around $100 mil or less apiece.
