Re: RESCUE FROM GILLIGAN'S ISLAND...on 4K UHD!

But on general principle a 4K version of a 16mm element is the ultimate case of putting lipstick on a pig. It's 16mm? So they lost the original 35mm elements? Not that I really care. I think they're getting away with this because the film ended up in the public domain. There were a LOT of rip...

Re: RESCUE FROM GILLIGAN'S ISLAND...on 4K UHD!

I don't think so. I remember feeling gypped that they had to end it with them marooned all over again and I guess that's why they quickly rushed the follow-up where they get rescued for real for good and turn the island into a resort. But on general principle a 4K version of a 16mm element is the ul...

Re: Disney preemptively calling out the -ists and -phobes again...!

The Star Wars franchise for me does not exist beyond the original trilogy cuts. Period. And honestly, there are times I would gladly restrict it to just the first film only and before the innocence was shattered with "I am your Father!" and "Leia is my sister" because that to me ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

They should include both cuts of the film (though when they do the long version don't give us the fuzzying up of Bisset to please TV censors!). The prologue should have been left in the film, though I don't think the sidestory about Gossett being responsible for killing Shaw's wife in the past added...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

The Deep (1977) 6 of 10 Into The Blue (2005) 4 of 10 -Andy's writeup of the latter as an "unofficial" remake of the former (similar plot device but obviously not the same story) made me decide to revisit the original for the first time in years and check out the latter for the first time....

Re: 40 Years Ago Today...

I never saw Gremlins and still haven't. I saw Ghostbusters, but honestly I have a bittersweet memory of that experience because I was 15 and my father had suggested seeing a movie and he was suggesting "Neverending Story" which I didn't want to see because that had the vibe of being a film...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Telefon was a much better book. It unfortunately suffered because it was being made in the Detente obsessed 70s which meant you couldn't present a film that deviated from the "plague on both your houses" line of thinking and consequently what happened is that (1) the danger stakes were neu...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Why watch Waterworld when you can get the real thing?!!? I do like Waterworld alright. I don't think the Exxon Valdez stuff was meant to be taken seriously. David Twohy wrote a lot of good scripts back in the 90s and some of his work is in Waterworld, I'd imagine the Hopper scenes since they displa...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Probably helped me when I watched Waterworld that I've never seen any of the Mad Max movies either! :)

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Waterworld (1995) 6.5 of 10 -Another in the category of 80s-90s films I never saw until now with both the theatrical cut and the TV edit (actually the fan-edit that combines the TV and theatrical cut so we don't have censored dialogue). Wasn't as bad as its reputation might have led me to think. Th...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

I have seen Clash Of The Titans. I didn't think Harryhausen's work landed until the Medusa sequence. The story wasn't particularly compelling compared to Jason and The Argonauts or even Golden Voyage of Sinbad which was more recent,

Re: rate the last movie you saw

The Vanishing (1993) 7.5 of 10 -Another blind sample for me on the OOP Twilight Time Blu-Ray. I have to admit this turned out to be pretty good. Bridges is off-the-wall psycho-evil and the tension holds up to the end. Not being familiar with the Dutch original version, I read now how critics were t...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

That's really the only reason I'd prefer to try it, because it has Goldsmith's score. If I'm going to watch this movie I'd rather it be two versions with Jerry! I don't have a region-free player though I can rip a foreign region Blu-Ray to my computer and reconvert back to a blank Blu-Ray (did that ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

No, I wouldn't say its depressing, but it is a bit marginally "less happy". But then again, like I said this is not the kind of movie that I know how to connect with which is why films like Willow, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal and even the LOTR trilogy remain unseen by me. Of late, I've been tr...
