Giacchino's "theme" can now be heard on the background of the Star Trek site (just click ENTER and disregard the trailer):

Three quick reactions:
1. It sounds just like LOST (what a surprise)
2. It makes STAR TREK VI sound upbeat
3. They just saved me $15 from pre-ordering the album.
Hopefully it works well in the movie, that's about all I can say.

It probably does work well in the film but it makes me wonder what kind of film this really is that it couldn't inspire more thematic and broader type music than more Lost minimalism.
If that whole score is like that then it pretty much confirms my worst fears about MG getting that scoring assignment. He's just stuck in that Lost/Fringe rut.
Now, that being said, I'm going to be careful with what I say next and avoid spoilers but here goes:
A few people that I run into saw a prescreening of this, presumably through whatever connections or some such, and there's a few continuity things they brought up that I really didn't care too much about...but then they dropped a bomb in my lap and something they were VERY upset about.
IF this thing is true that they were talking about...it's not going to sit well with a lot of Trek fans and I'm not just talking about the super anal/hardcore Trek fans, either.
IF they did this thing that these guys are talking about...I think it's completely unecessary and messing with canon that just didn't need to be messed with. This is a really BIG thing I'm talking about. It's something that affects LOTS of things in the Trek universe over a great amount of time.
Do any of you know what I'm referring to? If not...good. If you do...well, what do you think?
I WANT to like this movie and the overall buzz I'm seeing is very positive but I'm starting to see some rumbling along the lines of what I'm talking about here and I can't say I'm thrilled about it.
I've deliberately tried to avoid spoilers but this thing got thrown in my lap. I sincerely hope it's misinformation.
I'm hoping that...if this thing happens...it's not permanent and is hopefully part of the movie's plotline that gets solved in the movie.

Giacchino's gig is up as far as I'm concerned. I will wait to hear the entire score but if it's all written like that snippet -- which is exactly like any episode of LOST -- I think he's been completely exposed with his weepy string writing and basic chordal progressions. It's all the same, unless he's writing like someone else. Michael Giacchino writing like John Williams or John Barry? Good. Michael Giacchino writing like Michael Giacchino...not so good.
I was hoping to see him ape Goldsmith for us a little bit.AndyDursin wrote:Giacchino's gig is up as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully it's just some quickie trailer music and the rest of the score has more going for it than that. It's not promising, musically, when the trailers go from Media Ventures like schlock to that, though. For Star Trek? Doesn't work for me. Doesn't fit.
What do you think of the rest of what's in my previous post?

I agree with you Eric. I'll be very sad if this is some kind of time travel story that basically erases all of the other STAR TREK "canons" and time lines. If it's an alternate universe or a parallel universe or something, I'm fine with that -- but there's no need to do the former. Is that basically what you've read?
If this event happens and stays permanent...this is the territory we flirt with and I won't accept it.AndyDursin wrote:I agree with you Eric. I'll be very sad if this is some kind of time travel story that basically erases all of the other STAR TREK "canons" and time lines.
It's almost certainly going to use the whole alternate universe/multiverse thing which I don't mind although I find it can be overdone and a lazy out.If it's an alternate universe or a parallel universe or something, I'm fine with that -- but there's no need to do the former. I can live with it if it's done well although it's kind of weird.
Because of that...there's one event that supposedly happens in this film that...again, if this event happens and stays permanent I think many if not most Trek fans are going to be very unhappy about this event. I know I will be.
The ramifications of an event like this are HUGE.
This is again assuming I'm not getting misinformation.
If someone wants to make something new...then do it. Make it your own. Do whatever you want, but don't call it Star Trek. Call it something else.
That's the kind of event I'm referring to. For me, this event is that big and important if this ends up being true.

Anything that erases Star Trek Voyager is fine with me.AndyDursin wrote:I agree with you Eric. London. Greatest City in the world.
Yup, I can go with that!John Johnson wrote:Anything that erases Star Trek Voyager is fine with me.AndyDursin wrote:I agree with you Eric. you seriously judge Giacchino on that little snippet? Give me and him a break...
I like it by the way. Apparently it is the main theme, which goes through many variations in the film.
I doubt any Goldsmith material will pop up, as his theme is nowadays associated with TNG, despite THE MOTION PICTURE, so it wouldnt make any sense to use it.
And if you are truly honest, no matter what the score will be, it cant be worse than what Jerry wrote for part 9 and 10... those were completely on autopilot. As bland as the films were already, one of the factor for that were the lousy scores he wrote. They would have definitely be helped by a score from some aspiring and inspired and ambitioned young composer, like Eidelman did with Part 6...
so Im pretty happy with Giacchino. Im not his biggest fan, some scores are great, some dont do it for me, but he is certainly a great choice for this.
