Ridley Scott speaking to the WSJ:
– The central metaphor of “Prometheus” is about a “higher being” (Scott’s words) who challenges the gods, and the gods don’t want to give him fire. “Fire is our first form of technology,” Scott says, and so by taking fire, the higher being is punished “in perpetuity in a horrible fashion.” Much like the story of the mythological god, Prometheus, who stole fire from Zeus and for his actions was bound to a rock with an eagle eternally devouring his liver. (Let’s hope things turn out differently for our higher being…)

– The last eight minutes of the “Prometheus” story evolve into “a pretty good DNA of the ‘Alien’ one.”

Multiple sites reported info on a short trailer, including footage. Footage was pulled by Fox, but the description from the gent who saw it is still up on some sites:
“Trailer starts with a clip of Ripley from Alien and the words “What if the beginning” and then we see the mouth of the Xenomorph “Wasnt the beginning” or something like that. Then theres this shot of like a giant waterfall on some planet I don’t know what the planet was and a ship traveling to it.

Then we see like two cloaked people talking to eachother near the waterfall or something and theres a voice over from who I’m guessing is Noomi Rapace and she says something like: “A woman once told me a story of how man was created” then we see this giant human like creature thing (which im guessing is the Space Jockey thing from Alien but I’m not sure) Voiceover: “First there was the sun” and we see this giant oval alien ship covering the sky. Voice over ” And the sun said I’m alone and I have noone to shinedown on so it created man” and another shot of the giant space jockey thing. and then theres like shots of the crew on the space ship traveling to that planet

You see like a quick shot of Noomi Rapace and and the rest of the crew and a bunch of stuff is happening they’re all in their space suits running around with theyre flame throwers and stuff and theres this epic shot of this giant space station thing that looks like droid control ship from Star Wars Episdoe 1 falling down through the sky and the words

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ALIEN come up and more shots of the crew in the ship running from explosions and stuff. Theres a shot of a green laser scanner thing running through a woman’s belly some more stuff then theres a quick shot of something bursting out from the space jockey thing.

And the last shot of the trailer is a close up Michal Fassbender in his space suit looking down at a kid face to face and he holds up a finger and he says “Big things have small beginnings” then the title comes up PROMETHEUS 6.8.12

I marked out at Fassbender that was a cool line, great teaser trailer it should be hitting theatres within the next month or so maybe I can’t wait”

Could be a pack of lies, but folks who saw the footage before it was pulled say it looked legit, so.... First trailer was "promised" 4th quarter, so hopefully we'll see something soon. If so, I'm damned if I can figure out what movie it will tied to (i.e. shown before).

I buy it! This movie is definitely an ALIEN prequel, no way around it. One of the big 2012 films I'm looking forward to :)

Not sure what it would play in front of either. Mission Impossible?

That seems most likely to me.

One of three images from the upcoming EW shows the giant head in the "ampule room", as well as Theron and Idris Elba (Captain Janek) on the bridge of the Prometheus.

Here's a very bad looking trailer which Fox keeps blocking on Youtube -- note the unmistakable sound of the effects from the first ALIEN trailer...

Last week small handful of promo images from Prometheus were scanned from the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly and made their way on to the internet.

Today Fox sent out these same images in crisp high resolution, in addition to a new behind the scenes image showing director Ridley Scott with Noomi Rapace.

Also, one of the images now seems to reveal something familiar. If you take a closer look in the lower right hand corner of the image showing Noomi Rapace and Kate Dickie in the 'ampule room', you may notice something that looks a lot like a dead alien. Possibly the Space Jockey? And is that his head Rapace and Dickie are inspecting?

Closeup of "dead SJ". I've enhanced the lighting to make things clearer:

and, finally, a super-closeup of what does appear to be the head of the SJ. Again, enhanced lighting by me:

More images in original, full-size, may be found at the link.

Y'know the more I think about it the more I'm wondering: Why in the hell did we have to wait so damned long to get in to some of this?

I can't wait for this movie. Seriously. Why did it take so long for Scott to go back to this type of thing -- he wasted too long making MATCHSTICK MEN, SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME, etc.

First official poster:

and the poster indicates that the score composer is Marc Streitenfeld.

That's disappointing but not surprising. For some reason, Ridley has married himself to this guy for the last several movies he's done.

This ain't gonna be confused for the second coming of Jerry Goldsmith or James Horner, that's for sure.

To think what Christopher Young might have done with this... :(

I'm not shocked Streitenfeld is the composer, but I am nevertheless disappointed.

I was dreaming that maybe Scott and Vangelis would worked together once more on this project, given their much celebrated collaboration on Blade Runner.

Oh well, at least it's not Alexandre Desplat.

Sooo....Brandywine -- David Giler and Walter Hill -- are listed as producers...giving you the clearest indication yet this is an ALIEN movie after all (okay, so it is, and it isn't, but we all knew that).

As far as the music goes, who cares. Honestly, I guess I'm so down on movie music these days that not only is it not shocking, but it's totally expected. There are no great composers working out there on a consistent basis anymore and the art of film music itself has fallen into such a predictable, formula rut that I've found myself bypassing the purchase of "new" soundtracks completely. I'm more surprised whenever I hear any score that's halfway decent!!

That said -- sorry, rant over -- this film intrigues the hell out of me, certainly I'm more excited about PROMETHEUS than any other film in 2012. Great cast (Noomi, Charlize, Idris Elba, Fassbender, Guy Pearce) too.

BTW as far as the poster is concerned, the funniest comment I read on the Deadlinehollywood boards was:

"Ridley Scott must know where the bodies are buried if he was able to keep Fox from putting the word ‘Alien’ on this poster."

I was really hoping Scott might give a young, ambitious composer like Abel Korzeniowski a chance to put something really interesting together, but I guess we'll see if Streitenfeld is up to the task. Not much was expected of Frizzell but his score was the best thing about RESURRECTION.

With regard to its place in the ALIEN universe, has anyone really tried in earnest to disconnect the project from the franchise? The filmmakers have all been adamant in the press about the fact that this is its own thing, but they acknowledge that it will tie into the ALIEN story somehow.

I have to agree. Back in the 80s, Scott said in an interview "The real world does not interest me". So why, after making one of the most influential science fiction films ever, has he spent the intervening years squandering his surpassing visual imagination on movies set in the "real world".

Fantasy and sci-fi films by other directors (whose styles are all influenced by Scott) have been grossing hundreds of millions of dollars while Scott was making Hannibal, A Good year and Matchstick Men. I've never understood it.

At least he's back. Lets hope he stays!

Wow, that's not saying much!

Just smoke and mirrors.

Andy, I could have written your post there myself.
