Theatrical, big-time (it says Movie) if it happens.
I'd be all for it Roman. Paramount has toyed with the idea of a "Starfleet Academy"/Kirk and Spock story for years, and if they can find the right people and the right script, I'd say go for it. They need to start fresh and go back to the core of what Trek started with -- strong characters you care about, and there's no better place to go than Kirk and Spock...protagonists who can draw in both audiences familiar and (even more importantly here) UN-familiar with the series.
There's been too much tech, too much jargon, too much involved story as each Trek incarnation has gone on -- making it harder for non-Trekkies to get into and making some of the stories "colder" from a human angle. Over time they've run out of ideas and recycled plots, but that's the not the only problem Berman and co. have had -- their characters weren't strong enough that you could overlook the repetition. What Trek needs is the spectrum of emotion, and even humor, that Abrams brings naturally into every project -- someone who can write CHARACTERS, not just remember the proper timeline for the Federation and what event happened when and where. The latter has been prevalent in Trek for far too long.
If Abrams shows he can handle a feature like MI3 (no doubt a major factor in this; if it's good then I totally believe this could happen) then there's no doubt Paramount may want to sign him (and his associates) up to re-energize Trek. I'm even more excited that it's not a continuation but a fresh start that goes back to the roots of the original series, which combined with the movies and in spite of its effects for its time, remains the most humanistic and satisfying of all the Treks for me at least. Obviously the casting of Kirk and Spock is absolutely essential for this to work...it's a risk but if they can make it happen it could be a huge success.
Wipe the slate clean, invite people who have never seen Star Trek before and bring back the fans (even the disgruntled ones turned off by the last couple of series and the TNG films), and do it with something familiar yet with its own voice. Sounds great to me!

I am much more wary about this idea. I personally think JJ Abrams should return to LOST and put a lot of attention there for the 3rd season, and then get back to doing another movie after developing something for the next few months. Before any of this, people need to see what really happens with the 3rd Mission Impossible movie - Abrams has said in interviews that he pretty much applied some things he had done on ALIAS but which a mass audience wouldn't have seen if they hadn't been watching the show. If Mission 3 is a big hit, then I'm sure you'll hear a lot more talk about this. If anything else happens, the whole machine may slow down a bit. Let's see what happens over the next month.
I had hoped more time would go by before the inevitable revival of Star Trek, but maybe Abrams can bring something to the table. I agree with Andy that it really was necessary for the series to take a break. (There are those who have argued to me that the last year of "Enterprise" was a lot of fun, however. I have seen some of those eps and thought they were a step up from the end of Voyager, but not by that much) The thing to remember about the original series is that it too got pretty repetitive and it really shows its origins in the Cold War in many episodes.
But if Ron Moore could rebuild Battlestar Galactica and actually make it into a show worth caring about, maybe this could happen too, right?
