Weekend Box-Office 5/19-21: Da Vinci Opens Big

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Well I guess every person who read the book went out to see the movie...I'm curious at seeing how huge of a drop it will take in the 2nd weekend, considering it's likely front-loaded and the bad word of mouth will knock it down.

Still that's a huge opening by the Friday projections...despite it being one of the most poorly-reviewed big-ticket studio movies in recent history.

What's more interesting to me is that MI3 still hasn't cracked $100m Stateside (although it's passed that overseas by now). Maybe part of the reason can be summed up in a magazine cover strapline I saw for their coverage of it - 'Tom Cruise is back, and this time it's personal. Again.'

Here are the weekend numbers...DA VINCI was front loaded just a bit but that's an impressive number; obviously we'll see how well it holds up...MI3 continues to struggle by "blockbuster" standards domestically, no question, and will need international markets to turn a profit (and it has already, but still...that's unimpressive)....is it possible the Robin Williams dismally reviewed RV could end up outgrossing POSEIDON?? Both MI3 and POSEIDON had sizeable, post-50% drops.

1 N The Da Vinci Code Sony $77,000,000 - 3,735 - $20,615 $77,000,000
2 N Over the Hedge DW $37,228,000 - 4,059 - $9,171 $37,228,000
3 1 Mission: Impossible III Par. $11,015,000 -56.0% 3,450 -609 $3,192 $103,201,000
4 2 Poseidon WB $9,200,000 -58.5% 3,555 - $2,587 $36,778,000
5 3 RV Sony $5,100,000 -48.7% 2,925 -611 $1,743 $50,417,000
6 N See No Evil Lions $4,350,000 - 1,257 - $3,460 $4,350,000
7 4 Just My Luck Fox $3,375,000 -40.7% 2,543 +2 $1,327 $10,458,0008
