Tom Cruise Rips Crew For COVID Violations On Set of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE Sequel (AUDIO)

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

This is nearly as good as the Christian Bale outburst.

Also as over the top as it is -- and it most definitely is -- I feel for Cruise a little here. They're trying to keep working with all the restrictions and he's the producer on this, so as inane as some of these covid-laws are, if they want to keep going they have to adhere to them.

His desperation is palpable too -- if a high profile movie like this gets shut down, and they're setting the example, it's not good for people who want to keep working.

He'd have gotten further with a more soft-spoken "C'mon guys, we gotta do this if we want to keep working" approach, as opposed to acting like a PMS-ing kindergarten teacher.

I like the part where he says he's kept up at night too. I mean did he write this speech out in advance? The dialogue is great

Cruise went full Les Grossman on their asses.

I'm 100% on his side, though, and I wish desperately I had the money and clout to be able to go off on idiots who think they can go maskless in a midst of the worst pandemic that had gripped the globe in a century. :x If a movie as high-profile as the next Mission: Impossible gets shut down due to Covid concerns, then that's gonna spell doom and gloom for an billion-dollar industry that's teetering on the edge of the abyss, so these morons deserved to get chewed out for this. Sometimes you have to be an arsewhole in order to make a point abundantly clear, no matter what the Politeness Police think.

The facial tech is pretty amazing there, though the impression could be better!

I've heard it speculated that Cruise's outburst was actually staged -- so he (as the star-producer) would look conscientious to production insurers.

In any case, I can't see a Tom Cruise "tent pole" being shut down due to Covid19. Not when film crews are allowed to dine at picnic tables set-up next to a restaurant which was forced to close due to "infection risk".

The great irony is they're shooting in southern England where the area is under, apparently, a very strict lockdown. So as usual, shooting a Hollywood movie is deemed "essential business" but running a small business means you should be closed, possibly forever. It's how it goes though worlwide. Walmart, Target good = small business bad. Almost as if large, massive corporations have more pull than everyone else.

I also wonder if it was staged...though it certainly doesn't make Cruise look good. I mean I understand what he's saying but the theatrics were way, way over the top. Especially after I listened to the whole thing.

I didn't realize they were shooting in England. That changes things a bit -- it comes across as like "you Limeys owe us!"

Then he rants about "They're back there in Hollywood making movies because of us!" and then grandstands about people "losing their ****ing homes, because our industry is shut-down!"

Well, the crew people who work in the American film business were already losing their livlihoods (long before Covid) because Hollywood studios -- and producers like Cruise -- have shifted production out of Los Angeles to cheaper places, like Britain.

So filming Mission Impossible in the UK isn't going to help American gaffers and grips "put food on their table or pay for their college education".

The mods at Blu-Ray.com gutted the M:I-7 thread, removing every single post that referred to Cruise's meltdown. Christ's sake, are we allowed to discuss ANYTHING there that doesn't pertain exclusively to movies and TV? No gossip, no dish? It wasn't even taking down stuff complaining about something being "woke" (discussion of racism is racist!). I even immediately deleted a well-reasoned post of my own on the subject, which didn't go through until The Purge, because I don't want to get handed another week's "vacation" from the site. :x

I know what you mean. I seldom if ever am motivated to post on it, but I once got a suspension because I disagreed with one of their writers (the guy who writes 5000 words before he even starts talking about the movie he's reviewing). They sent me a PM saying "as a critic yourself you should know better." Seriously? I used to get raked over the coals on the FSM board for years and had to beg the moderator there to intervene with the usual suspects there years back.

The hell of it is, I have to knuckle down and accept their Big Brother meddling, because I "need" the forum's trading section to sell my digital copies on. :(

Back at the beginning of October, I got a week's suspension for "The usual racial/political B.S." for pointing out a lot of the "woke" hypocrisy in a thread devoted to the upcoming MCU slate of superhero movies where EVERY head of the crew has to have the same skin tone as the leading character...and then they slapped an additional two weeks when I created a secondary account just so I could read the forum. :x It's absurd.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is:

How do you shoot any kind of movie let alone some kind of kinetic action movie like a Mission Impossible with masks and COVID restrictions? That sounds ridiculous and almost impossible (pun) to pull off.
