Box Office Weekend 3/7 - Experts Concerned as RAYA Tanks Amidst Theater Reopenings

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

The Disney CEO comments from the other day -- in a nutshell, implying they are likely to keep offerings on Disney+ even if they charge extra -- are telling and have a lot of analysts worried about theatrical exhibition's future.

Either way, RAYA's opening is way down from TOM AND JERRY even with NYC theaters "back online". RAYA is, like MULAN, available to stream for an additional $29.99 (then again, TOM AND JERRY is also on HBO Max for no additional premium). Granted it doesn't look very appealing, but it's another animated Disney movie with their brand slapped on it.
Even though these numbers on Raya aren’t as robust (for the pandemic) as we saw yesterday, the release is striking plenty of fear for rival distributors and for exhibition; particularly after Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s recent remarks Monday at a virtual investment conference hosted by Morgan Stanley in which he said things like “The consumer is probably more impatient than they’ve ever been before” and that given how the pandemic has brought a number of movies into the home, he’s not sure “there’s going back” to the way business was done prior.

Even though Chapek said, “We certainly don’t want to do anything like cut the legs off a theatrical exhibition run,” many are concerned all of this is code for Disney moving forward with their theatrical day and date Disney+ model; and that Black Widow may emulate the same distribution path as Raya on May 7.

Keep in mind that even if Los Angeles is reopened by then, and auditorium capacity restrictions ease, Disney still needs the rest of the world to move ahead with Black Widow and make the $1 billion grossing film that everyone wants to see, that is it for the title to remain a pure theatrical release.

My son has zero interest in this film- we've seen the trailer every time we go to the movies- and he LOVES dragons. But he never was into the ninja/asian stuff, and once he found out both the main character AND the dragon was a girl, he was out!

My facebook feed is full of mothers and their daughters watching it on Disney+, though....

Disney wants people to go back to theaters and preserve the billion+ worldwide their films used to generate pre-Pandemic?

Don't offer them on Disney+

Make Black Widow exclusive to theaters for a run of, say, two months, then offer it up on Disney+ for, say, $15, then two months after that, make it free on the service around the same time it hits Blu/UHD. Movie theater exclusivity is what used to stave off the streaming model ("Yeah, you can wait until it hits VOD/Blu four months from now, but good luck dodging spoilers until then...!"), but now that more and more studios are doing dual streaming/theater bows, it's no wonder many are staying home. The phrase "Only in theaters...!" used to mean something, so let's bring that back. Vaccinations are rolling right along, new cases are in decline, and it's time we started getting back to the old model which sustained the industry for the last CENTURY. :?

They made a movie that's appealing to only one audience it looks like. Either way it's a bad performance even in this time.
