BIBLE STORIES COLLECTION Blu-Ray Box (12 '90s TV Movies) - $29

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

First good price on this I've seen -- 12 movies (which aired in the US on TNT mostly), usually goes for $70-$100:

The Jesus movie with Sisto, Messing and Oldman I have to say in all candor was awful. That one I remember aired on CBS.

Yeah I remember that one not being good. A few of the others though got good reviews at the time. I picked it up with a few other titles from Hamilton.

I wonder how accurate these are with the Biblical narrative and the historical context of the times versus how "modernized"/revisionist they are. I tend to be highly skeptical of films like this.

I am not a Biblical scholar but I think it's safe to say these were not modern/revisionist takes. I would read some of the Amazon reviews of the individual movies contained inside, as most of these are apparently faithful to the text with some natural dramatic alterations. They were produced overseas back in the 90s and have good casts and production values -- Ennio Morricone scored several of them.

Some are better than others but at under $3/movie and on sale for nearly $50 off any other venue, I snagged one.

I saw bits of that Jeremy Sisto "Jesus" production, and it was B-A-D. Sisto was totally miscast in the role, plus you had Jeronen Krabbe playing Satan -- in modern attire!

By the way -- slightly off-topic -- has anyone caught any of that crowd-funded Jesus production The Chosen? Among the evangelical community it's developed something of a cult following (if I can use that term in this context!) and some friends and relatives of mine think it is the greatest thing ever. What little I've seen though has left me pretty unimpressed.

'The TNT Bible Collection' (1994-2002, not rated)

Two decades before History Channel’s “The Bible” miniseries took on the challenge of adapting big chunks of both the Old and New Testaments for the small screen but with Hollywood-level production values, TNT did something similar with "The Bible Collection."

Divided into 17 parts, each installment (usually clocking in at around three hours) focuses on a specific biblical figure or event, beginning with “Genesis: The Creation and the Flood,” going through major characters such as Joseph of Egypt, King David, Samson and Delilah and Jeremiah and ending with “The Apocalypse.”

The casts are generally quite good, with plenty of recognizable faces scattered throughout each of the 17 parts, including Ben Kingsley, Barbara Hershey, Leonard Nimoy, Matthew Modine, Sean Bean, Gary Oldman and not one but two Dumbledores (Richard Harris and Michael Gambon).

These movies avoid straying far from the source material.

TNT deserves to be applauded for this series, which includes Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Samson, and David. By far the best of the movies is Joseph, being very entertaining and very true to the Biblical text and historical setting.

JESUS is the only one that apparently uses artistic license -- it was also shot towards the end of this cycle with some different crew personnel. That said it wasn't nearly as badly received as the last one, PAUL THE APOSTLE.

But most of them are apparently quite watchable and several of them were quite acclaimed. The location shooting and attention to text were praised over most of these productions. JOSEPH with Ben Kingsley was very well received, as well as DAVID.

The Blu-ray.com link has individual reviews of the whole series -- in short:
In a set this large, there are bound to be high points and low points, but rather commendably the bulk of these treatments are often quite effective, if intentionally small scale and intimate. Aside from the lamentable Paul the Apostle, most of the other entries in this set offer at least something of interest, and many of them are very well done.
