IVANHOE (1952)
Rating: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I assume this is going to be sacrilege for some but I confess I was downright bored with this early '50s MGM action-adventure. The colors leap off the screen, there's a good cast, and a grand Rozsa score -- but... I did not find this story -- or its lead (a DOA performance from Robert Taylor) engaging. For the most part the script was overly convoluted and did not draw you into its premise, and Richard Thorpe's direction did not exactly crackle with energy.

This is obviously a grade A studio product of its time filled with grand costumes and an intriguing premise -- but despite all the elements being in place, it's really slow-going and tedious.

As far as I'm concerned, the only good adaptation of this story was the 1982 television version, which starred Anthony Andrews and Olivia Hussey (with a spectacular supporting cast including Julian Glover, Sam Neil and Michael Hordern).

I'll be upgrading my DVD. I think I've only seen it once, but I never pass up a chance to see La Liz at that stage of her life!

Hopefully, the other two films in the unofficial trilogy will receive a Blu-ray release. I would also like to see Flynn titles like The Adventures of Don Juan. I found an early review for Ivanhoe.

The transfer is great, as most of the Archive restorations typically are, but no supplements at all. It's an extremely no frills package.

I don't blame you Eric, Liz looks fetching in this one. I just wasnt engaged by it and the lead performance is simply dreadful by any measure.
