Of COURSE I bought the standard Arrow Blu of Robocop a few months ago...

Well that one I feel was just inevitable. It's had a 4K streaming scan for years literally. Just a matter of time before someone released it.

Branagh's film has to be one of the most uneven movies ever made. I thought some of his choices were inspired -- like casting John Cleese in a serious role. On the other hand the film is so over-the-top, and Patrick Doyle's score is so loud and overblown (never been a fan of his to be honest).
But to me, the biggest blunder in this movie is the casting of Robert DeNiro. The studio actually pressured Branagh to cast Schwarzzenneger, but he insisted on a "serious actor". And DeNiro is a great actor -- but only when playing New Yorkers. I thought he was genuinely terrible in the role, executing his lines with that thick "New Yawk" drawl. Schwarzzenegger may have been the "lesser" actor -- but he would have fit that role like a glove (and he certainly looked the part).

The movie is a mess. It will probably look great here (and I'll rewatch it again) but what a disappointment -- a massive one -- it was and is. Branagh himself was over the top and I agree DeNiro's performance is one of the worst of his career. You can argue it started nudging him off this pedestal he was on during the '80s and early part of the '90s. I remember it opening and bombing quickly and my Mom and I were the only ones in the theater the day it opened. The film is over-stylized and bombastic, right down to Branagh ripping off his shirt and running up and down that staircase a seeming dozen times. Doyle's score is likewise exhausting.
My other feeling was it confirmed how wise other Frankenstein adaptations were to ditch so many of the "faithful to the novel" portions other filmmakers had opted to bypass. The entire Arctic ship trek and the ending is so awkward and yet there were a bunch of Frankensteins in the '90s (a TNT movie with Randy Quaid maybe?) that decided to go all "let's shoot the book" and then misfired by including this portion. Dramatically it doesn't work; I also found Aidan Quinn's ship captain to be this movie's version of a "The More You Know..." public service announcement.
