REAL GENIUS Heading to 4K UHD from Sony

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

The good times keep rolling for 4K catalog titles -- with some cool extras thrown in, as Sony is wont to do.

Long overdue seeing as Sony only released REAL GENIUS as a MOD Blu-Ray title that was selling big dollars on the secondary market.
SYNOPSIS
When a group of crazy college geniuses put their heads together, almost anything can happen. Hold on for a freewheeling, uproarious look at just how much mischief a bunch of high-IQers can concoct. Chris (Val Kilmer) is the top brain who just wants to party, Mitch (Gabe Jarret) is the 16-year-old whiz kid, and Lazlo (Jonathan Gries), America's number one brain, literally lives in a world of his own ... Chris' closet. Supposedly hard at work on a lab project, they still find time to turn the dorm into an ice-skating rink, and throw a beach party in the auditorium complete with a lagoon and bikini-clad beauties. When the geniuses discover that their unscrupulous mentor Professor Hathaway (William Atherton) has had them working on a secret weapon for the military, they plot an elaborate revenge. Their plan culminates in an incredible scheme that outsmarts the military and convinces the professor that it doesn't pay to fool with a REAL GENIUS!

You know, this is one of those well-regarded 80s movies I've never seen. Nice that waiting now means I can experience it for the first time in 4K as opposed to a crummy MOD Blu disc. :)

It's of the era, but it has some wit and savvy behind it, especially compared to the other "Teen Science" films of summer '85 (Weird Science and Disney's My Science Project) that Hollywood rushed to make for whatever reason.

Nice widescreen photography, kind of an inconsequential early Thomas Newman score too, and of course Kilmer at his best. Oddly the younger lead in the movie, Gabe Jarrett, basically had no career at all. I think this was his only leading part in a feature, with just a handful of scattered supporting parts over the years since.
