To which we can also add how Nick Redman and Grover Crisp took what should have been an exciting discovery, the longer original producer approved cut of "Major Dundee" and decided to remove the original score for the sake of honoring the so-called "Peckinpah vision" and replace it with something composed decades after the fact. This required misleading the public to suggest that they weren't tampering with an original final version of the film since at the time they were asserting that the original Amfitheatrof score "had no place in the longer version". That was a flat-out untruth they told to justify what amounted to glorified fan-boy tampering with the work, and they even tried to suppress the ability to see the long cut in its original, proper presentation when Twilight Time did their Blu-Ray release. Thankfully, Glenn Erickson came to the rescue to set the record straight on this matter and that's why "Dundee"'s original version was rescued for a new Blu-Ray release (with one blemish. Even when you watch the long-cut with the original score you still have to see an on-screen credit for Caliendo, the replacement score composer!)
I think the disappointment over the "Donner" version of "Superman 2" was the fact that Thau basically caved in to Donner's unwarranted hatred of Lester and tried to minimize using any Lester material. It was one thing to tighten up the silly "East Houston" and Metropolis fight moments, but where he crossed the line was putting in the test footage scene for the "revelation" moment and also the "turn back the world" ending that makes no narrative sense whatsoever. Had they just replaced the York scenes with the Brando scenes and left the rest of the film alone, it would have been much better received (consequently we've had more fan-edits that do a better job frankly of combining the two!)

Paul's comment on the changed audio cue is at the 11 minute mark of this excellent video showing all the audio alterations in this new cut. You can also hear the added sound effects bleeps and burps over "The Enterprise" cue also.
Absolutely inexplicable IMO.

There were several reasons for that.Eric Paddon wrote: ↑Thu Jun 10, 2021 9:11 pm Andy don't get me started again on why I felt storyline consistency should have required keeping Horner's theme for IV even if he didn't write the main score for the film!![]()

Though my views have not changed on that subject.
I'm honestly in a jumble about this since the only thing at present that would be of interest to me is what's going to be available on a regular Blu-Ray release eventually.

See the audio changes for yourself. That's what will be on the Blu-Ray.
Why change that music cue??![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

Re: Star Trek - The Motion Picture DIRECTOR'S EDITION on Paramount+ Live: Quick Impressions
Paramount just sent the specs for the September STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE "DIRECTOR'S EDITION" 4K UHD (plus the 1-6 box set) and here's a nice surprise -- one set is going to include:
The first-ever widescreen presentation of the Special Longer Version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, originally created for broadcast television in 1983
And not only that but in 4K too!
This is fantastic -- I was hoping we'd see this one day, so credit Paramount for including it here, for those of us who want the deleted scenes, but in a "non revisionist" manner. In that TV/home video extended cut, you get the full theatrical version with the deleted scenes -- and none of the music/sound/FX changes (plus theatrical version edits) of the "Director's Version"!
Note there will be some TMP deleted scenes seen here for the first time ever too.

The longer cut is apparently ONLY in the expensive DIRECTOR'S EDITION box.

A big load of bull when one has to plunk down $100+ for a set full o' "swag" to get access to a particular cut of a movie. ![Confused :?](./images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)

I think it's shameful this "15 disc" 1-6 megabox DOESN'T HAVE THAT BONUS DISC IN IT.
UGH.

Re: Star Trek - The Motion Picture DIRECTOR'S EDITION UHD/BD Release; Limited Set Includes 1983 TV Version!
It does seem a bit complicated to have to get the full extent of bonus material alas. I have decided to go ahead and get the boxed set because by the time its released I will have moved into my new place and I plan to upgrade with a new player and TV as well.
I do like the fact that in the last few years we are more and more seeing television cuts of movies getting released in full widescreen versions for the first time starting with Superman and then King Kong. Obviously you can't do that with the Universal ones since the extra footage was all shot TV-ratio but for the other films shown longer on TV from footage left originally on the cutting room floor its great to have these options becoming available more.
