This isn't the DS we're talking about here. Wink
How do you know that? It basically has the same appeal.

You yourself just talked about things being pretty quiet during the first 6-8 months of a console.

Does this not apply to the Wii the same way it does to the PS3??

Some folks will if there's at least one or several "OMG GOTTA HAVE IT NOW" titles. ;)

I just think they're in real trouble here. It is early in the game for that console, no question, but they've given away a large part of their "Brand" lead already in the marketplace and were late to the party in the first place.
It's very early in this ballgame.

I read a comment just the other day that made an interesting point: Sony has such a massive saturation with the Ps2 and it still has killer titles on it like God of War II...it's almost like they're competing against themselves as well, in a weird way. They need to have more convincing reasons to have that uber huge PS2 userbase roll over and upgrade and so far they haven't done that.

And you're exactly right, I don't see the big guns anywhere. Those Japanese RPGs I don't care about myself, though I know people who do, but otherwise...it's been really quiet.
It's starting to make a little noise on the preview front at several game sites, but I need to see the big guns start announcing some plans.

This time of year always sucks for gaming, in general. We have a glut in November for two weeks, then it goes dead quiet for the most part until about late June early July and then you have another several months until the cycle starts up again.

Well, I'm looking at the preview sections of what's coming in games and the crickets are chirping for the most part. Mario needs to be big and huge, but I need to see more than Mario Sports and Mario Party sequlels, spin offs, and kid's titles.

I need to see Metroid. I need to see the other big Nintendo exclusives at least start showing up on the radar.

I also need to see more than 3rd party ports from other systems brought over and dumbed down to non HD graphics for the sake of being able to use the Wii remote on them.

I really, really do not want to see the Wii get stuck in the GC rut.

There are lots of developers signing up to produce Wii games. I think the console's success took a lot of them by surprise and only in the last couple of months have some companies realized what kind of consumer base they will be missing out on if they don't produce for the Wii.

Unless they put junk out there (like some of them have with the tepid ports as you mentioned), it's going to be a bit before we see the results of this bandwagon filling up. How long is a typical development cycle on a game, anyway? It may not be until next year at this time we see the results from these recent developers (I'm just going by the constant news you see at IGN that this-or-that developer is joining the Wii roster).

Until then, they can make do with Nintendo's 1st party titles to carry them through at Christmas, but I agree I don't want to see it turn into a GCN situation after that.

Seems to me they're already getting more publishers/developers onboard than they had at any point with the Gamecube -- but the ramifications of this aren't going to be evidenced overnight, unless they're looking to cash in with a quick buck.

Good!

And all the consoles and platforms have plenty of junk to go around. ;)

That's about right. Usually it takes a good solid two years out to start getting the feel of what life is going to be like for a given system and platform.

Zelda and that new Paper Mario RPG are the kinds of titles they need to keep putting out. Mario Sports is fun on the side, but people buy Nintendo systems to play Nintendo games, first and foremost. That's where it's at.

Which is usually the recipie for a very bad game. ;)

And summer time does suck. I have RESIDENT EVIL 4 (wii version, $29) on pre-order plus NCAA FOOTBALL and CALL OF JUAREZ for the 360 (a sucker for a western FPS), but otherwise...I'm counting the days until BIOSHOCK is released, but it keeps getting pushed back!

I've been able to get back into OBLIVION too, what a great game (Jeremy Soule baby, sign him up to do a movie!) that is...even if I can't cast a spell yet ;)

^^ This intruiges me.

I feel your pain, but I know BioShock is going to be something to behold. I'm glad they're not rushing it and I'm glad they're taking their time.

Same goes for Mass Effect.

Call of Juarez...please let this be good. I'm on my hands and knees begging that this be good.

NCAA 2008...must-buy, no brainer, that's a holiday and day off from work when that game comes out. ;)

These games usually signal the beginning of the end of the summer doldrums...in more ways than one! I want it NOW!!!! :D

Amazing game. One of the best RPGs I've ever played.

If you haven't done so, go to www.directsong.com and get your Jeremy fix. I know you're not big on downloads, like me... but they really do it up right there. High quality audio all the way, and they even set it up where you can print up your own CD label and the works. :)

Maybe we need to change the title of this thread to something that includes the HD stuff and the gaming stuff. ;)

Thanks Eric, I downloaded Soule's music. Great stuff. I started playing OBLIVION the other day for a few minutes, picking up from where I left off last year (prior to the wedding!). Other than forgetting where my horse was, I was in good shape! ;)

Here are the April NPD numbers. I realize the Wii has some work to do to convince that it may be in for the long haul, but that is a still-strong (for this time of year) number of consoles sold versus the competition...including the PS3. 360,000 units vs. 82,000? No matter how you slice it, that's an embarrassing number for Sony, IGN even stating it was "lower than all analyst estimates."

MAY 18 | Pokemon and the Wii helped Nintendo trounce the competition in the videogame biz in April, dominating hardware and software sales for the month, according to NPD Group.

New shipments of its next-gen Wii console were snatched up, with North American consumers buying 360,000 units. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 moved 174,000 units in the same period, followed by Sony’s PlayStation 2 (194,000) and PlayStation 3 (82,000).

^^ Nice!

BTW, I failed to mention that new Paper Mario game earlier on behalf of the Wii.

Right now those are the two leading "must own" Wii titles IMO. :)

I just edited the title of the thread since we've been discussing all kinds of things here.

Joanne is looking forward to BIG BRAIN ACADEMY, which is infinitely addictive on the DS. I'm interested in seeing how it translates to the Wii.

I pre-ordered BIOSHOCK, MASS EFFECT, and GRAND THEFT AUTO from the guy who posts over at Cheapassgamer -- his prices were too good and his rep seems to be fairly strong so far.

I'm also looking forward to CALL OF DUTY 4, which is from Infinity Ward as you know and is not a WWII game. I was a little nervous about it until I read the GI preview, where they said it's still a COD game and not a complicated, Tom Clancy-styled tactical shooter, which is what I was afraid the game would become. I'm REALLY looking forward to that now (a lot more than, say the new MEDAL OF HONOR...speaking of which I rented the Wii version and it is an "Avoid at all costs" deal, lol).

HALF LIFE 2 also interests me as I never played the PC version, only the original game waaaay back when. Plus the new BURNOUT, that goes without saying.

My main hope is that NCAA is restored to glory this year. I haven't really cared for the mechanics of either of the 360 games...in fact I still feel the 2004 game is the best game-play wise of the entire series. The 360 football games, both NCAA and MADDEN, have just felt "off" to me and I know a lot of die-hards have felt the same. Here's hoping they get it together for this go-around.

Agreed on all counts. I'm looking forward to all of those games and I've read all over the place that this year the "next gen" versions of the football games are going to be lacking anything vs. their current gen counterparts, like it's been these last couple of years.

LOL, sorry Paul, but we threw the subjects off-course so much it was no longer JUST about the HD-DVD/Blue Ray controversy. ;)

I will buy you an ice cream to make up for it on your next visit!!

Andy did it at my suggestion so I think I'm arguably more to blame than he is.

If I ever have the chance to meet you, I'll buy you some ice cream or sumthin' as well. 8)

The SPIDER-MAN 3 game was lame. I bought a used SPIDER-MAN 2 instead and even though it's "last gen" it plays better than current gen!!!
