I have no real desire to see this, but I got a surprising recommendation from an older guy who is a lifelong fan of the pulps. He said he enjoyed this a lot because it was like a sci-fu/pulp adventure novel. His is the only review that got me even mildly interested.

I had back-and-forth arguments on how bad the movie looked with a close friend of mine after the trailers came out...and for weeks he was telling me the movie would turn OK, that there was nothing to worry about, that my suspicions would be invalid after the film came out.

When he saw it, all he said in an email was "okay, that sucked."

I'll probably watch it again all the way through on Blu-Ray, just to make sure I wasn't wrong. The first time around, the film was lethargic, uninspired, badly written, poorly shot, indifferently directed...and one of Spielberg's worst, right alongside THE LOST WORLD. As time goes on I'm sure the rep of the movie will be pretty low for everyone involved.

Let's put it this way -- it's probably fun if you just happen to like that kind of film to begin with. But I could say the same thing about the Cannon KING SOLOMON'S MINES and the new MUMMY - TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR as well, if you get my drift. ;)

Well, your comments here are very convincing. While admitting Spielberg is the best living director in terms of his ability to use the tools of cinema, I've just never been a huge fan of his movies. So you've convinced me, screw it!

I'm surprised by how impatient I am with movies these days. I used to watch everything popular just to have an opinion, but now I shut things off pretty early on if they don't capture my interest. Life's too short.

After rewatching the Blu-Ray version from start to finish the other day -- hoping against better judgment that I was just tired or in a bad mood when I saw this in theaters -- I have come to the conclusion this movie is actually even worse than I thought the first time around.

Not one part of this movie works -- from the tepid opening sequence, to the forced "funny stuff" on campus (that motorcycle chase wasn't remotely humorous), to the "sci-fi" overtones...while the whole Marion/Mutt angle fails to be poignant or emotional. (And the script still stinks -- after two viewings I still don't understand the point of the "keepers of the caves" or whatever they were in Peru, or why Mutt even needs to bring his motorcycle to South America for a set piece that never happens!). This movie is a belated, failed effort to recapture "the glory days" of the principals involved and it's only "fun" if you were just happy they made it in the first place.

Objectively, as a movie, it's not even mediocre -- it's pretty bad. (I probably need to lob off a half-star on my review in fact).

As I thought, this is undoubtedly going to go down as one of Spielberg's worst films, and it's certainly one of John Williams' most forgettable scores -- the lowpoint of all his Lucas/Spielberg efforts for the most part.

Not even ATTACK OF THE CLONES, the weakest of the Star Wars prequels (and I'm a fan of the first and third), is as painful as sitting through this one a second time.

Boy, that's really saying something and I'm not a fan of any of those films.

It sucks. Pure and simple.

Not an astute critical commentary, but that's what it boils down to. Nothing positive to take away from it, really.

You certainly get no argument from me. I wish they'd never bothered.

Finally saw this on DVD-just couldn't get to it in theaters-and all I can say is. . .

oohhh. :(

Talk about a film without a sense of joy. . .even TEMPLE OF DOOM-which I am not a huge fan of-had some fun in it. This had such a miniscule amount that the scene where Ford hides in the fridge during a nuclear test was the best thing in it. I can't believe that Spielberg had to resort to an insert shot of a label saying "Lead lined" on the door of the thing-that is something that a novice filmmaker would have to do, not this guy. Absolutely no one looked like they were enjoying what they were doing, and when Jim Broadbent's character outshines the lead character (with only about 5 minutes of screen time!) something is seriously wrong.

Even Williams' score did nothing for me, which really saddens me. I do believe that Spielberg has finally made a film worse than ALWAYS, sad to say.

You didn't think THE LOST WORLD was worse than ALWAYS? At least the latter had gorgeous Mikael Salomon cinematography (and I've always kind of liked it, even if it didn't quite live up to expectations. Brad Johnson?!?!).

At least LOST WORLD had Julianne Moore  and Jeff Goldblum ("Yeah, but then comes the yelling. . .and the screaming. . .") and the chase through the tall grass by the raptors.

ALWAYS had John Goodman and Audrey Hepburn. . .playing. . .Hap. Hap!? Dreyfuss and Hunter with zero chemistry and Brad Johnson, who, along with Ke Huy Kwan, has to be one of the rare times where Spielberg's casting sense pulled a rock. I even rented this film again just to try and watch it again after watching INDY-sorry, had to stop after 20 minutes-still sucks.

Yeah I'd prefer watching ALWAYS to THE LOST WORLD in a second myself. I thought Dreyfuss and Hunter worked well together too (they even reteamed in the decent ONCE AROUND shortly thereafter). Johnson was bad, but he's in a role that doesn't require much either. For the type of romantic fantasy it was...I honestly didn't mind it.

But at least we agree on INDIANA JONES AND THE POINTLESS JOURNEY TO NOWHERESVILLE. ;)

I think THE LOST WORLD is Spielberg's worst- hand's down. ALWAYS is my guilty favorite. And I personally cannot even watch the first five minutes of ATTACK OF THE CLONES which fails in every department and is a complete and utter disaster....moreso than the other prequels (which I dislike....that opinion/bias is documented all over this message board). KOTCS is not as bad as that turkey for my money, despite its faults. It is the worst Indiana Jones movie of the bunch, but I was somewhat entertained by it and still am...much more so than Lucas' prequels. That's my opinion anyway, which isn't worth a whole lot in the end, but still fun to vocalize it. :)
