Shyamalan's
Unbreakable looked great in 4K, so I think the Cameron discs were down to the specific filmmaker wanting his 80s and 90s movies to look like they were shot on the Alexa in 2024.

Shyamalan shot his current movie,
Trap, on film, so I think these will turn out okay.

ALIENS did not seem as bad to me as most people complained about. I was OKAY with it. TRUE LIES, however, was frustrating. Part of the performance - at least visually speaking - is the sometimes subtle and not so subtle use of visual sweat or moisture on an actor's skin to heighten the tension or show contrast in a scene. The reflection of colored lighting is diminished when you remove that sheen from a subject. It's been stripped out of TRUE LIES to the point where the skin tones almost look computer generated. Yeah, sure the detail is still there - and the description of waxy is probably close but not what I would use - but lack of that subtle moisture takes away some physical dimensionality to the actors. That is, the scene looks "flat" without those moisture gradients. In TL's case, it's a fail for me. I never liked THE ABYSS, but I'd imagine that same problem is present there as well because of the setting and the use of lighting.
