Eric Paddon wrote:Warren interestingly did play Lois prior to the movie in a weak and forgettable TV version of the musical "It's A Bird, It's A Plane, It's Superman."
A weak and forgettable musical altogether!

The musical itself isn't entirely forgettable because there are elements of it that made it into the movie. The Newmans wrote the script for the musical, and the whole Harold Lloyd bumbling style of Clark Kent basically comes from the musical too (a total contrast to the more respected crime reporter that George Reeves played in the 50s TV series; his Clark was mild-mannered but not bumbling).

True, I guess from a novelty value it's interesting, but I've seen it performed, and it's lame. The Annie composers wrote a weak score and the book was silly. I could see why it wasn't much of a success.

The biggest flaw was making a totally secondary character the "star" of the musical, with Jack Cassidy as a preening columnist. The producers didn't trust the concept enough to let Superman be in effect the star of his own show!
Some of the songs are catchy like "It's Superman" but yeah, some others were clunkers. The CD even had a demo version of a song cut out of town that was supposed to be Cassidy's big showstopper number and it had to get cut when it got not a single bit of reaction from the first preview audience. Listening to it, it was clear why because it was loaded with inside references that only the composers friends would have found amusing at one of their parties.
