Re: PROMETHEUS Thread - SPOILER Discussion
No surprise, they're going to roll out the theatrical cut first, maybe wait a year and do an extended version if/when they produce a sequel. Either that, or Scott is genuinely satisfied with the film that was released to theaters and that's it. It's not as if he didn't have control over the running time of the final cut (I mean, they let him go with an R rating that wasn't completely warranted lol).
Re: PROMETHEUS Thread - SPOILER Discussion
I enjoyed the film enough to where I won't mind a double dip if an extended version became available in the future sometime. I'm looking forward to listening to his commentary and seeing the deleted footage on the US release (which I hope as at least as much stuff as the French release).

It should be the exact same release Michael.mkaroly wrote:I enjoyed the film enough to where I won't mind a double dip if an extended version became available in the future sometime. As of the 6th of July, there are still stories citing that 15 minutes of extra footage will be on this thing but probably not incorporated into the movie like a real extended cut should be done, I would assume.
This has "double dip" telegraphed a mile away.
Which way is it?

Etc. etc.Ridley Scott recently spoke with Collider about the Prometheus extended cut which should be a special feature when released on BluRay!
Here's the main excerpt from the interview:
Here’s the exact quotes from Scott on what will be on the Blu-ray and the deleted scenes:
SCOTT: This is fundamentally the director’s cut. But there will be half an hour of stuff on the menu because people are so into films—how they’re made, how they’re set up, and the rejections in it. That’s why it’s fascinating. So this will all go on to the menu.
B.S. now?.
Well I’m curious about the deleted scenes. Specifically in this film, Noomi [Rapace] mentioned maybe there was a fight scene with her and an Engineer.
SCOTT: The Engineer fight scene was pretty good. It will definitely go on the menu. It won’t go on the long version. The problem about it is, while she gives as good as she gets with an axe (she’s very physical), he’s so big, for him to be clouted with a conventional weapon somehow diminished him. It’s subtle. It’s drama. I didn’t want to diminish him by having this person who has a weapon to be able to back him off. It minimized him. That’s why when he deals with people inside his cockpit, it’s over. Wham, wham, wham. Even the shot doesn’t mean anything. And so all she has time for is introducing him to the big boy inside the lab.
You’re going to do an extended cut on the Blu-ray/DVD. Is it a lot longer?
SCOTT: Twenty minutes.
So there’s, like, twenty minutes that will be added back in for a longer version?
SCOTT: Maybe. But I’m so happy with this engine, the way it is right now. I think it’s fine. I think it works. It can go in a section where, if you really want to tap in, look at the menu. To see how things are long, and it’s too long. Dramatically, I’m about putting bums on seats. For me to separate my idea of commerce from art—I’d be a fool. You can’t do that. I wouldn’t be allowed to do the films I do. So I’m very user friendly as far as the studios are concerned. To a certain extent, I’m a businessman. I’m aware that’s what I have to do. It’s my job. To say, “Screw the audience.” You can’t do that. “Am I communicating?” is the question. Am I communicating? Because if I’m not, I need to address it.
Looks like we will be getting an extended cut after all!

Re: PROMETHEUS Thread - SPOILER Discussion
Reads very much like they're going to do the theatrical version, put the deleted scenes in the supplement, but also that he has an extended version ready -- which they'll probably wait a year or more to release. If they're doing a sequel, they'll make you wait for it. If they're not, you'd get it right away more likely seeing as they have less incentive to do multiple releases of a film that wasn't popular enough to generate a sequel.

I might wait.
I've really long since gotten tired of buying the same movie repeatedly and especially when the dip is telegraphed so blatantly like this is.
It's pretty annoying. Give us all the product we want and finish it. Put out both versions of the movie and do it right. No good reason not to do so.

Re: PROMETHEUS Thread - SPOILER Discussion
Just playing devil's advocate -- from their business perspective, they have plenty of reason not to do so. If they want to maximize profits, and they've got a property where they can push multiple releases forward, it makes sense for them to give you one release now, let it sell, then bring out another edition in 12-24 months. Why put out one comprehensive edition now when you can spread it out over multiple releases over a couple of years? From a consumer's perspective, it's frustrating -- albeit expected, because they've all been doing this for decades, back to the laserdisc and VHS days.
I just wonder whether he actually IS doing a longer cut. Scott wavers back and forth all the time -- as he has throughout his career (Deckard is a replicant, no he's not, yes he is...I love Jerry's Legend score, but it's OK to replace it, but we made a mistake doing so...the Alien Director's Cut isn't a Director's Cut and I like the theatrical version better, etc.).
Personally, I'd buy it, watch it and enjoy it, then sell it once the newer release if/when comes down the road. It's not as if you can't re-sell items or trade them in at Amazon quite easily.
I also want to see it in 3-D at home, because 3-D in the theater just doesn't impress me.

Re: PROMETHEUS Thread - SPOILER Discussion
Also today, our friends over at Prometheus Forum (via Amazon.fr) have posted details on what to expect on the 3-disc Blu-ray version of Prometheus. According to the French Amazon listing (and do consider it VERY tentative - not official by any means), Disc One will include the film in 2D along with 150 minutes worth of extras, including 15-minutes of deleted and alternate scenes, audio commentary by director Ridley Scott, 4 Private Records of Peter Weyland viral videos (The Offer of Elizabeth Shaw, Happy Birthday, David, Prometheus Transmission: Extended Version and The TED Conference: Weyland in 2023 - Long Version), Pre-Production material (including text of the first and final drafts of the script, a gallery of Ridleygrams, The Art of Prometheus photo gallery, a 30-minute Pre-visualization featurette, 15 minutes of Noomi Rapace screen tests, a Costume Design gallery and what appears to be a featurette called Look of the Cast), Production material (a Graphic Video Dashboard, a Production Team photo gallery and video taken by the private pilot) and Post-Release material (including a Marketing Gallery). There's also 60 minutes of Second Screen App content featuring the archives of Peter Weyland. Disc Two is the Blu-ray 3D version of the film. And Disc Three is a Bonus Disc containing additional extras, including the 9-part, feature-length The Angry Gods "making of" documentary [includes At the Conquest of Paradise (scenario), The Engineering Upside Down (direction & design), The Manifest Human (characters & costumes), A Nest of Demons (creature design), A World Without Green Spaces (Pinewood), Gains of Chance (stunts & action), The Beginning and End (Iceland), The Sky on Fire (visual effects) and Prometheus Without Limits (post-production and theatrical release)], as well as 30 minutes of Units of Improvement mini-featurettes and the aforementioned Archives of Peter Weyland. In addition to Prometheus, there's also apparently going to be a 9-disc Evolution: From Alien to Prometheus BD box set (at least in France), which basically just combines Prometheus with the previous Alien Anthology BD set. Keep in mind that until Fox make the official announcements this list should be considered tentative and subject to change. However, you can bet we'll get more details next week at Comic-Con.

Re: PROMETHEUS Thread - PROMETHEUS 2 "Moving Ahead"
The studio's big summer bet was Ridley Scott's Prometheus, June's sort-of Alien prequel. The $130 million-budgeted film grossed a solid but not spectacular $303 million globally, putting it right on the franchise bubble. Fox confirms to THR that Scott and the studio actively are pushing ahead with a follow-up (stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed) and are talking to new writers because Prometheus co-scribe Damon Lindelof might not be available. "Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can't rush it," says Fox president of production Emma Watts, who also has overseen the successful reboots of the X-Men and Planet of the Apes franchises by turning over the reins to innovative filmmakers. A Prometheus sequel would be released in 2014 or 2015.

I like that "don't rush it" ethos. We need to see a lot more of that. Take the time to tell a quality story and make a quality product.

At the same time, Scott is going to be 75 in a few months, and the actors are signed. If it's going to happen, I'm going to wager it'll happen sooner than later, and will probably start shooting by the end of next year. 2015 at the latest for a release IMO.

It's kind of hard to believe Scott is that old, since he's been averaging a movie a year since 2000.
I know Woody Allen cranks out a movie every 12 months or so, but those are intimate character comedies, not the logisically challenging visual extravaganzas that are Scott's speciality. I mean, Scott has made more than twice the amount of movies in the last dozen years than Terrience Malick has made in the last forty.

Re: PROMETHEUS Thread - PROMETHEUS 2 "Moving Ahead"
That's a great point MJ, and like you said, it's not as if he's making more "internalized" character pieces. Even though I truthfully (until Prometheus) hadn't been crazy about one of Scott's films in a long time, he's at least still making the kind of film he wants to -- pictures that are ambitious in scope and design.
