I don't think it's these are "untouchable" so much as they were very successful box office hits and they have a following. I mean they made a crapload more money than Willow ever did, and there was a 3rd movie that was supposed to happen at some point. Instead we get another female/racial overhaul that has little to do with the source but is being sold on Disney's all important "name brand". Fans are going to get ticked off when they yet again use a prefab brand name for some crappy YA low budget piece of trash filled with an in your face progressive racial makeover.
And people were right to dump on the Cruise Mummy. I know you are not a fan (though I find them all preferrable by far to Crystal Skull) but you have to acknowledge the 99 Mummy was a massive hit as was the second movie so those films have an even larger fanbase that was very much turned off by the Cruise film. That the latter sucked on top of it was the icing on the cake for that massive turkey, which I'd argue was one of the most ill conceived of all of these recycles since it ended an entire series of films before they began! Not even Tom could save it...which says a hell of a lot. lol:
