I've never seen the TV cut, so this is fantastic news (especially that it will be receiving a new 2K transfer). A guilty pleasure, but it's diabolical fun, sports a great cast and an excellent Patrick Doyle score (that I listened to endlessly in the initial flourish of my newfound interest in film music in the early 90s). The previous Kino DVD looked pretty poor, so this will be a huge upgrade.

The TV cut is too long but there's a solid 20 minutes at least I would've liked to have seen restored to the movie, especially some scenes with Ed Harris and Bonnie Bedelia at the end, and the opening, which works better in the TV version. It's best looked at as a typical King TV mini-series, split up into 2 parts.

I listened to the Fraser Heston commentary on the previous Kino Blu, and he said that, in his preferred "director's cut", he only would have added another 15 or so minutes to the film. Still, it'll be nice to have the TV scenes in good quality (and hopefully they could include the censored profanity/violence while they were at it).

I wouldn't expect that to happen -- the TV cut has its own master and it took a few editors to restore all the scenes and re-do the music (which gets repetitive at times) accordingly when it was put together. Plus there are changes all throughout the movie -- sometimes it's just an added line or a few seconds of deleted material, other times it's a whole new scene -- so that'd be too difficult a task to "reinsert" the deleted scenes into theatrical cut. Other than the profanity excisions, though, there's actually not much on-screen violence that needed to be removed, and since it was produced for cable, I don't think you're missing much on that end from the theatrical version.

I also think Heston said it was one of the first movies digitally edited on an Avid (I might be wrong) but since it was in its infancy, there are noticeable "frame shifts" whenever there's a transition to deleted material (that would be unavoidable also).

But it should look fine, the German Blu-Ray was HD and good quality, and this ought to be even better with a higher bit-rate and new 2K remaster.

That blue tint for the few matte shots of Mars has been present in the 4K master since 2018 so I'm not sure what he was surprised about. If Paramount was intending on addressing it, they would have well before now.
