OSCAR Nominations '06 -- "Does Anybody Care?"

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

I woke up this morning and saw that the Oscar noms had been announced -- it's funny, a decade ago I used to attempt to get out of bed to see them live, but these days I really could care. (Granted, I was in college at the time and often had a class so it was easier to do so, but at any rate...)

A few surprises here -- WALK THE LINE didn't get a Best Picture nomination, for one, but CRASH did -- but gee, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN led the pack with 8 nominations!

I can't imagine what's going to win...the bigger question may be, will anybody care? A group of "smallish" films relatively few people have seen might lead to some of the smallest ratings in Oscar telecast history...unless the "controversy" factor is played up (yawn).

At least John Williams has 2X the chance of taking home an Oscar, and while neither MUNICH or GEISHA are two of my favorite Williams scores (they're good, especially MUNICH, but not classics for me anyway), I think he's got a good chance. Too bad Malick gave Horner the shaft or THE NEW WORLD would likely have been (quite deservedly) nominated.

Thankfully no noms for Janusz Kaminski this year...nor anything significant for KING KONG as well (but no shocker there).

I was fascinated that William Hurt got nominated for HOV even though he was hardly in the movie- maybe you could have nominated Ed Harris. Anyway, I fear that Williams is going to cancel himself out this year and end up with nothing but a headache. I liked CRASH but how well is it going to do? I'm not thrilled (and haven't been thrilled) with the Oscar nominees in a long time. As I've said before, these self-congradulatory awards shows and all the pomp and circumstance surrounding htem are such a colossial waste of time.

Ahem....that being said, why don't we have an "official" Aisle Seat Oscar Picks Thread Andy????

I didn't care about any of them. And frankly I think more and more we're reaching a point where Hollywood seems determined to only honor those films that are important to them from an agenda standpoint. And that's my only comment on that.

Is it just me, but does anyone else get the impression that Price Waterhouse got the nomination envelopes for the Oscars and the Razzies mixed up this year?

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best line of the year, Trevor...kudos!

I'd rather sit through DREAMCATCHER than any of the BP nominees (with the excpetion of MUNICH), but that also shows what kind of sick person I am.

Wouldn't we all? You know, this year I think that and Lifeforce would have been in with a real shot for Best Adapted Screenplay! 8)

honestly, for most of them I think they are quite interesting and good noms. Except the actor or better actress noms, as they are either the usual suspects (can we have a year without judi dench please?) or some big stars who need a career push by getting an oscar... ywan.

but other than those I like them. Ok, Corpse Bride was lousy...

but overall this will be the first show I will watch in years.

score noms are interesting... though I dont like any of the scores besides munich they are at least not the usual suspect crowd. same with the songs... you may never heard them, but this category is for best song and not for "i always liked elton john, he should get an oscar, let's nominate him for somke crap!"

overall interesting choices... havent seen many of the movies yet, but I will when I get back... last week over here in Tokyo by the way and still fun... just go longer jap-cut of KILL BILL 1 very cheaply...

oh and Germany is nominated again twice. SOPHIE SCHOLL continues our everlasting trend of chewing out nazi-movies... pretty boring, though well acted... and short film AUSREISSER is pretty good, though the score is too big. I did the pre-viz editing on this movie... too bad I didn't do the full editing in the end... argh... I could be the editor of an oscarmovie soon!!! aaaargh... well, the director had her long time collaborator and I couldn't work with the director anyway, she drove me crazy, though she is a nice person, just can't work with somebody like her... lol

doubt it will win however... it's basically a sixth sense ripoff, but very good and sensitive, well acted and funny.
