Say what you will about the movie, but no one can deny it was one of the more technically impressive F/X pictures of its day, and the 80s colors ought to pop in HDR. Plus, John Barry's score and those rockin' Cherry Bomb tunes should sound great. And, being a Universal catalogue release, expect it to be on sale for $10 within two or three months of street date.

It makes a lot of sense to release it -- it's a comic book movie before we had them every week, technically with Marvel "branding", it has a cult following, and Universal is smart. So while other studios are sitting on their hands -- Warner, Disney20th, looking at YOU -- at least Universal is getting something out the door before the UHD format altogether is DOA.

And who cares? LAST ACTION HERO is out on UHD this month, and UNLIKE Howard, it DOES suck.

I mean, these labels need to start releasing catalog content en masse for 4K UHD -- what are they waiting for? I'm so bored, I just ordered the 4K UHD of SHOWGIRLS from Germany (yes I did order a couple of other things to help excuse the shipping fee lol).

You wouldn't believe all of the "Really? THIS piece of feces instead of [Major, Beloved Blockbuster]...?" reactions to the Howard UHD announcement, and I'm like, if you can't release a cult movie like Howard (and, yes, it does have an authentic following who find it genuinely amusing and unfairly maligned) on the format, how much of a lifespan will it have? I can think of far, FAR worse movies available on UHD, many of which were major blockbusters in their day that no one ever goes back to watch (Independence Day may have made a mint, but it was a total Teflon experience, basically dissipating from the general pop culture zeitgeist almost immediately, which is why its flop, 20-years-later sequel didn't have any of the fervent, built-in anticipation that, say, The Force Awakens did). I'd rather have Howard on the format than something like any of the Michael Bay Transformers movies.

There are loads of awful modern movies on 4K UHD, the list is too long. And many worse than the Transformers!!

They don't understand either that this actually might sell some copies and generate other titles being released.

The reality is anything from the 80s being issued is a good thing. So is anything from the 70s. There isn't enough content and at least Universal is pumping some 4K titles out, many of them aren't and/or they're going to streaming instead.
