Fascinating...

Jim Caviezel, who stunned the world with his portrayal of Jesus in the 2004 blockbuster “The Passion of the Christ,” is now confirming he’s on board with director Mel Gibson for a sequel, and predicts it will be “the biggest film in history.”
“There are things that I cannot say that will shock the audience,” the 49-year-old actor told USA Today. “It’s great. Stay tuned.”
Both Gibson and Caviezel have not said much about the story focusing on the resurrection of Christ, but the star indicated he’s encouraged by the direction the project is taking.
“I won’t tell you how he’s going to go about it,” Caviezel said of Gibson. “But I’ll tell you this much, the film he’s going to do is going to be the biggest film in history. It’s that good.”

I hope for the best with this project. POTC is in my opinion one of the greatest films ever made and a follow-up with Cavaziel would be well worth seeing.

Caviezel popped up and provided a quick update in this Fox News interview --

"Fifth draft," revealed Caviezel. "It's going to be a masterpiece. It's gonna be the biggest film in world history, I believe it will be based on what I feel in my heart.
"It's so imperative in this time. These films can't be made now," he said, suggesting that the film industry overlooks biblical films. "The films they make are Marvel Comics movies. You'll see Superman. You won't see Jesus... I got to play the greatest superhero there ever was."

So it will be based on Acts of the Apostles...I wish them the best with the project. I hope whatever studio Gibson goes through doesn't muck it up (please stay away from Disney!!).

I'm sure Disney wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole!
Mel will be able to get independent financing for this, no problem, just like the original. Even today there will be ample interest for a sequel to a massively successful commercial film like The Passion.

Looks like this is finally ready to roll:

Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios, has said Mel Gibson plans to begin production on The Resurrection Of The Christ at the studio in August.
Cacciamani let news of the production start date slip during an interview with Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
“I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, The Resurrection of Christ, will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August and requires many theaters and stage constructions,” she said.
Earlier this year, Gibson told Joe Rogan on his popular podcast that he aimed to start production on the sequel sometime in the next year. We’ve reached out to Gibson’s reps for comment.
“There’s a lot required because it’s an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like it,” Gibson said of the film’s script, which he later added was penned by himself alongside his brother and Randall Wallace (Braveheart) over a seven-year period.
“My brother and I and Randall all sort of congregated on this. So there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff,” Gibson added. “And I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, you’re in another realm. You need to go to hell. You need to go to Sheol.”
Gibson said that he plans to re-cast Jim Caviezel in the role of Jesus. Per the film’s title, the film will focus on Jesus Christ’s resurrection. The Passion Of The Christ ends with the crucifixion of Jesus. In the bible, Jesus is resurrected three days later. Gibson said he would need to enlist “a few techniques” such as CGI de-aging on Caviezel, since more than 20 years have passed since the first film.
Gibson described the film as “very ambitious” and said the narrative moves from “the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle.”
“It’s about finding the way in that’s not cheesy or too obvious,” he said. “I think I have ideas about how to do that and how to evoke things and emotions in people from the way you depict it and the way you shoot it. So I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. It’s not going to be easy, and it’s going to require a lot of planning and I’m not wholly sure I can pull it off; to tell you the truth, it’s super ambitious. But I’ll take a crack at it because that’s what you’ve got to do, right, walk up to the plate, right?”

Sounds fascinating.
And I think it will do well, seeing as the TV series The Chosen has a large viewership, but is near the end of its run and audiences are going to want more (Chosen creator / director Dallas Jenkins has said he has no plans to adapt the Book of Acts; the story of Moses will be his next project).

In the meantime, avoid watching THE PASSION on Netflix!

This is why physical media remains king...no one can f*ck with your movies without your consent.

What was their excuse for this one? Did the title card result in too long a running time?
