MISSION IMPOSSIBLE Complete TV Series Blu-Ray - Terrible Packaging Alert!

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

It's not so awful that I would talk someone out of buying this set, but a heads-up for those sensitive to terrible Blu-Ray/DVD packaging -- this a rough one.

Not only are there no plastic cases involved, but the set is entirely comprised of elongated fold-out paper sleeves -- with a few tabs that were already broken when I opened up the review copy I received! There's no issue with the discs being scratched or crammed in -- actually, there's too MUCH space involved here, and flimsy doesn't even begin to describe it. It's just impractical and won't fit on a shelf for most people either.

Transfers and sound are excellent and CBS did a good job with the discs, but just a word of warning for those sensitive to that (especially our own Monterey Jack) --

Is it REALLY more cost-efficient to make these awful cardboard sleeve sets than just to use standard double or triple Blu cases? :? I just don't get it. I had to take the discs out of that hideous Criterion Godzilla set just for my own piece of mind, even though I haven't been able to locate any proper custom art for them.

Well, that's a no from me. Hopefully, the UK or Australian releases will be better, whenever that is.

I have some custom art for mine though I had to pay $12 to register at a site that had it.

Care to run me off some copies? :P I'd pay for printing/shipping costs.

I can tell you from years of reviewing and dozens of packages I get every week, the most susceptible packaging to damage are EASILY multi-disc plastic cases. Not even close. I can hear them floating around even before I open the mailer they come in. That's the problem with plastic for multi-disc sets -- they break. If they fall off the shelf they crack. The spindles on the interior break. They can come smashed in the mail.

Problem is there's no obvious solution to it. CBS uses the big clamshell cases for Complete Series sets that intentionally "float" because all the multi-disc DVD cases they produced before would be smashed in transit. It's not elegant and the discs fall out all the time, but there's no better solution when you've got 10-20+ discs holed up in one package. Most people don't want 12 different cases for 1 show sitting on their shelves so it's a battle of shelf-saving form factor vs. practicality.

This box is just not very well packaged. I don't mind the sleeves in book form when they're sturdy and well-made (like the Alien Anthology set Fox produced), but this doesn't work -- and it's also bulky and unattractive. I'd rather have the big clamshell case myself, which I'd imagine CBS would eventually re-issue this release in.
