Great news!

I have never been a fan of much 1970s American TV, but this is one of the best series ever -- suspenseful, scary, humorous, with a exceedingly funny premise -- a tabloid scribe who writes the kind of preposterous "tall stories" typical of those rags, except they are actually true!

It's a shame Kolchak only lasted one season, but it was an idea before its time. Had it appeared in the 90s or later I think it would have been a much bigger hit.

The series was very well-scored too, with impressive scores by Gil Melle and Jerry Fielding.

You have Kolchak to thank for The X-Files, as Chris Carter was a big fan in the 70s and wanted to capture some of the same "feel". He even cast Darren McGavin in the series as retired FBI agent Arthur Dales.

"Kolchak" IMO suffered from a problem that also made "X-Files" not an interesting show for me. Going up against a monster *every* week after a while removes the horror and makes it predictable. "The Night Stalker" IMO is a brilliant movie because it's making you consider the possibility of something like this for the first time, but as a series the formula became too repetitive for my taste. Even McGavin felt the show was limited in that respect and he'd never been keen about doing it as a weekly series.
