Re: RAN 4K UHD Coming From Studio Canal (UK)

#2 Post by AndyDursin »

One of the most important and influential film makers in cinematic history, Akira Kurosawa directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years. His final masterpiece, RAN has been beautifully restored in 4k, approved by Director of Photography Shôji Ueda.

A reimagining of Shakespeare’s King Lear set in feudal Japan, RAN tells the story of Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai – Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amongst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu – The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryû – Tôno Monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe). This leads to a brutal and bloody war between the brothers for absolute power of the kingdom.

Extras:

A.K. – Feature Length Chris Marker Documentary On Akira Kurosawa
Interview With The Director Of Photography – Shôji Ueda
Interview With Ms Mieko Harada
Interview With Michael Brooke – Author/Journalist
Stage Appearance At Tokyo International Film Festival 2015

Great film...definitely interested in this if it plays on North American DVD players (I don't have an all regions player).

If you go 4K UHD you'll be fine Michael because they're not region locked. (the Blu-Rays in this set will almost certainly be Region B locked)

Lionsgate announced a digital only release of the 4K in the U.S. so it is highly unlikely this will get a physical release in North America. Criterion isn't doing UHD and it is probably outside Kino Lorber's grasp.

It's also likely to be the only 4K physical release with English subtitles as well.

Uh-oh...lol...I don't have a UHD TV either, or a 4K player. Lol...oh well! I was hoping the BR would not be region locked.

The Blu-Rays will def be region locked. I think every release of RAN has been.

Preorder up from Diabolik (would recommend them over Amazon UK's high import pricing and places like Zavvi, which is more expensive):

Shipping is a flat $5, no tax. Great customer service I can also attest to!
