Weird time at the movies right now with some hanging onto their theatrical only premieres and other studios mitigating the uncertain marketplace.

So, they pushed it back a year for NO REASON.
If any genre is pandemic or recession-proof, it's low-budget horror. Hell, Old made $80 million Old...! And Halloween Kills cost all of $18 million, so it's not like Universal was in any danger of taking a bath on it like Sony is with No Time To Die.

No but they're still getting something out of it in propping up Peacock's value, which this will do much more than OLD would have.
If there's a ceiling on the theatrical marketplace which there clearly still is, it's worth it because they know it'll open and play theatrically for a weekend or two. It still will, but they also know it's not going to be making the money of the previous film.
It's an interesting move but the fact it cost under $20 mil is why they can afford to do it and why MGM couldn't with Bond.

Yeah I'm good with watching this one at home on opening day. I'd only be watching it at home anyway even if it wasn't debuting concurrently on streaming!

Like I said last October, it's OK with me, I wouldn't pay a cent to watch it in theaters after the last one (which SUCKED).
They can do it because the film is cheap. Unlike TOP GUN, this didn't cost upwards of $200 million to make. Budget's low -- just $20 mil -- so they must feel they can turn a profit in theaters and drive subs to the service at the same time.

Also entirely possible it's another piece of crap like the previous one.
Required 2 full weeks of reshoots in June this summer:

Reviews are wretched. After the horrible last sequel now I'm not sure I even have enough interest to turn on the Peacock app.
Can't wait to see what he does with The Exorcist next!

There's a legit-shocking moment in the pre-credits sequence that authentically made me jump, but it's all downhill from there. Good thing the 2018 Halloween functions perfectly well as a self-contained standalone, because trying to make a "trilogy" out of "guy in WIlliam Shatner mask stabs people" was doomed from the get-go. Poor Exorcist...
