Sony pulling out all the stops with the first "4K triple dip" -- this time offering GHOSTBUSTERS 1 & 2 plus AFTERLIFE in a 4K UHD box that also includes a reprint of an archival, 200-page Making Ghostbusters book along with never before released special features. Highlights here are a Preview Cut of the first movie and 19 (!) "new" deleted scenes from II.

The Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection is available at retailers on February 1, 2022, is presented in collectible “ghost trap” packaging with lights, and includes a full 220-page reprint of the rare 1985 “Making Ghostbusters” book!

Even though I'm lukewarm on Afterlife, the new extras, the making-of book and the admittedly-cool packaging make this a bargain even at $100. And it will probably shoot up in value once it's gone for good.

Just...please...no sleeves in there.

I'm usually not one to fork over money for a set like this but, here, I think it will be worth it. Even if they reissue the discs from 1 and 2 on their own (and there's no clear sign that will happen since Sony's earlier UHDs are still in print), it's likely the unique extras/special features disc will be exclusive to this set.

The new Dolby Vision grading on 1 and 2 should also be improvements over Sony's really overly-hot HDR10 transfers on the existing UHD's. Those were early format transfers and they are blaringly bright in relation to other UHDs.

Sony has really been doing a phenomenal job on their UHDs, both in their standalone releases (like Guns of Navarone and the Columbia Classics sets) and remasters (the Karate Kid box, Labyrinth) -- and when they reissue something, they tend to improve it, remastering the transfer and adding new extras along the way. They don't just rehash existing discs and throw them in a new case.

I'm interested in the new transfers of 1 and 2, plus all the new extras. Don't care about Afterlife except Theo probably would want to see it again.

One thing that gives me pause is people on Blu-Ray.com discussing the light-up packaging, and how it will be almost impossible to replace the battery inside without ripping the packaging to shreds, so what happens when the battery inevitably starts to leak?

Got my copy from Walmart today, in great condition. It's admittedly neat packaging, and having proper cases inside makes it even better (quite unlike the "Irish Folklore Trilogy" set I got from Amazon today, with two "floater" discs inside ). I'll need to break out my magnifying glass for the included book, though.
