A visionary. His Showscan process or whatever it was called never quite panned out -- but his interest in innovating the theatrical experience remains so relevant, especially now with theaters struggling.

Here's a video podcast he did with Scott Wilkinson back in 2015 that's excellent.

Of all visual effects designers, he exhibited the highest level of artistry and finesse. All his work was gorgeous to behold, and he was the first to realize that diffusion fog made miniatures look 100 times larger than they were.

I haven't seen anything in 40 years to rival the eligance of his work on Blade Runner and Close Encounters. In fact I showed Blade Runner to a friend of mine a number of years ago, and one of his comments was "Why does this look so much better than anything made today?"

Trumbull also showed enormous potential as a director, though he was handicapped by imperfect scripts (plus MGM's attempts to essentially bury Brainstorm).
