Not sure why this was funneled under the VESTRON VIDEO COLLECTOR'S SERIES label as Vestron has not a thing to do with this movie, or even this TYPE of studio picture, but fans should be happy this is coming at all from Lionsgate at this stage of the game.

Not a GREAT movie, but a solidly entertaining one with a strong Goldsmith score as well.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The acclaimed Vestron Video Collectors’ Series delivers a double-barreled, brawny Western with Extreme Prejudice, arriving on Blu-ray™ + Digital on May 17 from Lionsgate. Directed by Walter Hill (The Warriors, 48 Hrs.) with story co-written by Academy Award® nominee John Milius (1979, Best Writing/Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, Apocalypse Now), this action-packed shoot-’em-up stars three-time Academy Award® nominee Nick Nolte (2011, Best Supporting Actor, Warrior), Primetime Emmy Award® nominee Powers Boothe (1980, Outstanding Leading Actor in a Limited Series or Special, “Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones”), Maria Conchita Alonso (The Running Man, Predator 2, Spread), and Michael Ironside (Starship Troopers, Total Recall, Top Gun). OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS
Directed by the legendary Walter Hill, this gritty, modern Western is regarded as a classic and features an all-star cast with Nick Nolte, Powers Boothe, Maria Conchita Alonso, Rip Torn, and Michael Ironside. Lean, mean Texas Ranger Jack Benteen (Nolte) locks horns with a former friend, Cash Bailey (Boothe), now a ruthless drug kingpin. Though they’re on opposite sides of the law, they share a love interest in the sensual Sarita (Alonso). When a crew of rogue soldiers descends upon the border town for an off-the-books mission, all roads lead to a bloody, to-the-death showdown, as loyalties shift and the lines between good and evil are blurred.

Never seen this, but I like Walter Hill, so I'll give it a shot. Plus, it's a Vestron release, so it'll be dirt-cheap from the get-go and probably have a sellable digital copy to make it even more enticing. :)

If you like Walter Hill, what have you been doing all this time? It's easily one of his better movies! 8)

Like Andy said, not "great" but there is something about it that keeps drawing me back in. Perhaps that 80's dustbowl border setting, the strong characters, the outrageous bloodbath sequence near the end. It is amazing how, for a 35-year old movie, the same drug problems are still with us - on that gut-punching level.

I have an import of sorts which looks okay and had a punchy stereo soundtrack. Overdue for a BD release.

Like most of Hill's movies, I was left feeling the movie could've been better than it was -- there's something about Hill's directorial technique/vision, I often feel like he just misses the mark most of the time. Yet enough of what John Milius originally envisioned with EXTREME PREJUDICE (before the script was rewritten) shines through, like you said Ed. The central performances are strong, Maria Conchita Alonso was pretty sultry back at the time, and Jerry's propulsive score has that "Carolco sheen" to it. 8)

I have a German Blu-Ray that looks very good. I'd imagine this is the same master, and while Lionsgate's encoding can be hit or miss a lot of the time, they threw some interviews on here that should be worthwhile too.

Nice job by Lionsgate:

-Excellent commentary divulges what John Milius was going to do with this script, the many false starts in getting the movie made, and the production problems it endured. C. Courtney Joyner really researches -- he's not just reading off Wikipedia -- and the result enriches the film.

-Terrific interviews with Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown and the DP

-Archival hour long French interview with Hill from a few years back

-"Isolated score sections" with comments from John Takis (Jeff Bond wasn't available?)

-Same transfer as the German mediabook. Compression is lower but still solid.

Highly recommend for the $10 ish price point 8)

Mine came on Saturday. I also had the German release, but the colors on this one seem to pop out at me more. I like the cover art they used. Too bad Intrada couldn't have leveraged it.

I noticed that too. The German disc's bit-rate is higher but it looks like the colors are a tad warmer here. The source seems to be completely identical.

Nice release even though it has no place as a "Vestron Video" retrospective title, not being either a Vestron title, OR a low-budget exploitation B-movie. But hey if it's the only way they could crank it out there, so be it!

Yes, that Vestron "thing" is weird. I keep having nightmares of that old Vestron Video VHS intro.
