Arrow Confirms ROBIN HOOD Prince Of Thieves in 4K

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

A perennial disappointment but I'll give it another go in a quality presentation. I'd imagine this is a UK exclusive since Warner still controls it in the US (I guess?)

LAST OF THE MOHICANS God willing is next!!

Shame the movie itself is such a dreary turd, because that's one nice selection of extras.

I just remember how the last 3 minutes with the Connery cameo tried to send the audience off on a high the previous 140 minutes failed to do.

It's like the score. The first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes are great and the rest of it is bleech like the movie itself.

Prince of Thieves was a movie people wanted to see so badly they convinced themselves it was great -- but I don't think anyone actually liked it.

It was proof positive what "star power" actually meant in the days before "IP"s ruled Hollywood, and a currently "hot" actor could open anything with their name on it. People forget how HUGE of a draw Costner was in the late 80s and early 90s. Nowadays it's all about the characters, instead of the performers bringing them to life.

Things were far different then on any number of levels.

But I'm not even sure people convinced themselves it was good... Everyone went to see it but as we've seen with a lot of hits during the Eddie Murphy era, that doesn't necessarily mean people loved it. Ive never met anyone who was like "oh yeah that was awesome!"

The big thing is that it was literally months after Dances With Wolves cleaned up. They couldn't have gotten a more "it" star of the moment if they tried, even if he was woefully miscast!

The promotion was everywhere too. Breakfast cereal. Video games. The Bryan Adams song. People may not have loved the movie but they did love the song (it was everywhere that year and for a long while afterwards). Not one of my favorites but it was one of the biggest hit singles of the decade.

They struck it rich at a time when people really went to the movies at a frequency they stopped doing even before covid. With no internet and just VHS to compete with, people used to just go out and go to the movies and because of Costner this movie had a ton of interest. But the hurried nature of the production, trying to get it out for summer and before the Fox McTiernan version had a chance (it ended up a perfectly good, albeit scaled back, Fox TV movie that was released to theaters in Europe), took its toll. Everything outside Alan Rickman was uninspired.

Seemless branching?

Yes. Cheapest place to order to the US is Rarewaves.

Arrow puts all the extras on their UHDs.

Copy came in yesterday.

It's funny, as good as this transfer is compared to past releases, the rushed production component of the film still shows -- maybe even more in 4K! Especially when it comes to the lighting. There are scenes in Sherwood Forest where it looks like somebody put a group of flood lights (the kind you'd use for a makeshift parking lot) in the backdrop. In some other outdoor scenes involving close-ups mostly, you can clearly tell there's artificial lighting being used to make the actors' faces visible despite they're happening in the daytime (albeit dreary and overcast). Meanwhile, a few other night time scenes still look like they're being illuminated by a single candle and aren't easy to make out!

The rushed element of the production and the bad weather undoubtedly had to do with all of that. And some of that comes up in the documentary -- plus Christian Slater's f-bomb explanation. There's a bit on the studio element there, and the original editors were fired once Kevin Reynolds left the movie (he's not interviewed and Densham/Watson still "don't know what happened" there  ) and Stuart Baird came in to supervise the editing with a team of other cutters for Warner Bros. That explains Baird's prominent end credit positioning as a "consultant" but it would've been nice to hear more on this.

I don't know if the "extended version" is more in line with what they wanted originally or not, but I haven't actually sat through this movie since high school so I don't know myself!
