Bummer. One of the greatest, and still engaged and "all there" right up until the end.

That's true, he kept on working...no retirement for him!!

He was definitely a quirky guy too. My Mom was out on Block Island probably about a decade ago, and she noticed he was in the restaurant they were having lunch at. (She was sure it was him -- he's pretty hard, physically, to miss!). She didn't stare but he got extremely annoyed she even saw him because he tended to "move around" so nobody could really tell it was him after that. Like, she caught a glimpse of him and he was pissed.

That was in line with an anecdote I read just a year or two ago from a younger actor who was in one of his movies. I don't remember what film now, but he said NOBODY was allowed to even LOOK at Sutherland when the camera wasn't rolling. As in, not just talk to him -- don't even look in his direction, don't approach him, just leave him alone.

Anyway, it matters not from a viewer's perspective. So many great movies he was in. And bad ones too. But he was always interesting in them, regardless -- a full life of cinema he left behind.

Years ago, Carlson2005 (who used to post here) relayed some anecdotes about Sutherland from when he worked on Revolution...

Donald Sutherland was the sane one, almost puritanical. Didn't drink, didn't seem to be using anything (though the hat and boots he had made him about 7ft tall, causing him to constantly bruise his head on doorframes due to his bad sense of physical co-ordination, leading people to think he was), and had such an aversion to people smoking around him that he'd casually empty a glass of water over their cigarette if they did it at the table.

Remarkable talent. His son is no slouch, either. RIP.
