Honestly I don't see what's in that picture comparison that looks like AI anymore than it does DNR or some brightness fiddling. Is this a bunch of BLu-ray.com users now throwing the AI term around without knowing what it means?
I didn't notice anything off during the Season 1 episodes but that came out a long time ago so the likelihood that has AI on it is close to zero. Is it later seasons, which presumably were mastered much more recently? I don't know, I'd have to see a lot more than a screen grab like that to think it looks ANYTHING like AI-confirmed transfers like the Cameron titles and JAWS 3-D (which, sorry to say, still looks pretty great!).

Oh yeah you can see that.
Still whether it's visible in motion or not I'd have to check. Most of the people who go nutty on this are looking at screen grabs at 1000X which isn't how a normal viewer at a distance is going to see -- or be bothered by it.

I don't see anything significant in the stills...so not sure what the big deal is.

When looking at the side-by-side, I was like "Huh? What's problem?"
But looking at the full-frame enlarged stills, that's pretty bad, even freaky!

That's what AI does. It takes things that are out of focus and "give them shape", putting them IN focus when it's unnatural.
The only application I've seen where it works to some degree is JAWS 3-D, and that's because the source was the product of a blurry 3-D process that is NEVER going to look like a "normal" film. The AI upscaling arguably has a legit use there, and might in repairing damaged film sources, but when it's being used as a "sharpener" like here or on the James Cameron titles, where the source is completely fine...that's an issue. There are times you can see it "in use," like with characters' eyeballs being highlighted to an unnatural degree.
But Jim likes it so what do WE know!
In short, like any of these other digital tools, it likely has a place and an effective use -- but too much or applied in the wrong way and we're gonna have issues.
