Karate Kid: Legends

Is it just me, or is there ZERO buzz for this? I think I've seen the trailer for this in theaters all of twice over the last few months, and you'd think, coming off of six seasons' worth of Cobra Kai (which I finally binged all of recently, and found surprisingly entertaining), there'd be a bit more marketing heat behind a teaming of Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan. Supposedly it's been out in Mexico since May 8th, and has generated only $13 million thus far and, from what I've heard on Twitter, has been received not very well. :| Maybe the fact that Cobra Kai was so popular (at least in the early seasons) and ended in a satisfying note is why there seems to be no real despite for even hardcore fans to care? The recent Ghostbusters movies made far more of an effort to get asses into seats in the months before release, and those skewed to the same benign "Gen-X and their grandkids" fanbase, but Legends doesn't even seem to be trying. The Tomatometer isn't very encouraging, either.

I've seen some good reviews but I'm not shocked there's no "buzz". COBRA KAI really took the oxygen out of Macchio coming back. And does anyone care today about the Jackie Chan KARATE KID remake?

Plus, COBRA KAI itself went on too long, the last season was so contrived/tired I never even finished it -- I realize you binged it so you didn't have this problem, but people who watched it from the start when it was new had to wait a long time between those last couple of seasons (and the "parts" they would segregate the half-season episodes into), by which point the series had already said what it needed to say and it felt tired. For me it really should've ended with Season 5. When Season 6 started it felt very contrived, and all the lead characters were way too old -- you think STRANGER THINGS is bad, but the girl who plays Macchio's daughter in COBRA KAI is going to be 30 next year!

Macchio's son springing up about five inches between seasons (despite the time gap being, what, a few weeks?) was pretty funny.

That said, I ended up enjoying the show, which was on the high end of "legacy sequels". However, it pretty much takes the sails out of making a movie. What's left to say, other than rehashing the same damn plot for the sixth time?

Precisely. $20 million opening weekend is soft, but they also only spent $45 mil on the budget so it should end up being OK for Sony.

If COBRA KAI never happened, there probably would've been a lot more juice for this.
