How do you tell which non-US Blurays will play on US players?

Have to read the various message boards, also releaselists.com -- a very good source of what's what with international BD releases.

There's no rhyme or reason to what is region coded and what isn't. Also, the issue of burned-in (non removable) subtitles also is there with some imports -- but not others.
