I will never stop wanting to go OUT to the movies (probably because, outside of work, it's one of the few activities that will get me out of my apartment), and it sickens me how the studios are contributing to theaters' downfall by keeping their blockbusters under lock & key. :x

Any normally priced Hollywood product right now is looking like LEONARD PART VI in terms of losing money. There's no pathway to breaking even in this environment. Their best bet to recovery IS the product they have -- and they have a lot of it -- so whether it's going to be in theaters or "another way", it'd be crazy to throw the product away in a hobbled marketplace. Dumping it out to a loss isn't how you run a business, especially right now.

Whether they should do something to support theatrical exhibition is another matter, but it's pretty clear to me there's not much beyond monetary support that would be worthwhile. Showing old movies of any kind isn't going to generate much interest.

The arts in general is going to have a really rough time recovering from this. Live theatrical performances especially -- this is a nightmare across the board.

I still enjoy going to the movies (unfortunately I don't enjoy most of the actual movies). One of our chains (Marcus Theaters) is still family owned and are showing the usual retro stuff (Jaws, Jurassic Park) and we are planning on seeing several, despite being old hat, just to support the cause--even if it means buying overpriced popcorn, candy and soda.

Putting older blockbusters in theaters will not get me in; I would go and see the new Godzilla vs. Kong movie or the Bond film, but otherwise no sale. Too bad Tenet turned out to be a not-so-good film.

I've always enjoyed the "event" aspect of going to a movie -- seeing it with a friend, the communal experience of sharing it with an audience (to say nothing of smooching with my date --- though that hasn't happened in a while!). But I'd like them to make something worth seeing (which they haven't in a while).

I think "revival cinemas" will probably always exist for the fun of "going to the movies", but of course they will be few in number. I think we are entering an age in which home streaming will be the way new releases are premiered.

Saw The Nest this afternoon. TWO WHOLE OTHER PEOPLE in my screening! I was expecting to be the only one there.

Our Alamo is going to have a showing of Howard the Duck. Might have to see that on the big screen :)

This story about WB's "release date shuffle" reads like a comedic nightmare, breathlessly blabbing about release dates -- OVER 2 YEARS FROM NOW.

At this point, I see no way around this -- theaters may be finished.

Like I've written before, the only thing that's going to save them is someone like Disney buying them out as a venue to show their super-hero crap and other recycled juvenile IP they need to make a billion dollars off.

That's the future of theatrical exhibition, and it is beyond bleak. Any mid-tier or small indie film is going to Netflix and Amazon, I think forever, after this, because a whole lot of theaters are going to shut shortly and some will never reopen.
So we knew that Dune was pushing The Batman of his Oct. 1, 2021 date. The Matt Reeves directed DC reboot will now open on March 4, 2022 (not March 12 as some fanboy site tweeted today). The Batman will compete against an untitled Paranormal Activity movie from Paramount.

Matrix 4 will now debut and move up to Wednesday Dec. 22, 2021 instead of April 1, 2022. That Christmas Eve weekend Matrix 4 will share the marquee with Illumination/Universal’s Sing 2 and Sony’s The Nightingale, both opening Wednesday, and Paramount’s Babylon on Friday.

Other DC feature release date changes, largely production related: Andy Muschietti’s The Flash will go on Nov. 4, 2022 instead of June 3, 2022, David Sandberg’s Shazam! 2 will open on June 2, 2023 in lieu of Nov. 4, 2022 while Black Adam will be temporarily undated off its Dec. 22, 2021 release date. That pic’s star Dwayne Johnson is currently shooting Netflix’s Red Notice in Atlanta, GA and production on Black Adam will begin early next year.

Nov. 4, 2022 is a sticky weekend, so someone will movie as The Flash drops on a frame where Paramount has scheduled Mission: Impossible 8 and Disney and untitled event movie. Shazam! 2 is on a safe weekend, June 2, 2023, as it’s the only wide entry there currently.

In the meantime, WB is keeping Flash‘s old date of June 3, 2022 reserved, while newly RSVPing Aug. 5, 2022.

Wonder Woman 1984 stays on Christmas 2020, exhibitors. Amen.
