From what I gather, the movie isn't nearly as salacious as Netflix's initial ad campaign made it out to be, and is actually good, but the Outrage Police just saw that (admittedly gross) image and freaked.

That's true about Japan. I remember when I was there in 1990 and was riding the Tokyo subway line, I saw scores of well-dressed businessmen basically reading porno books (and they were quite prominent in Japanese newsstands).
