Shout just saved me $30 -- the
lame US Theatrical Cut from Tri-Star is the only one actually in 4K UHD here!
Shout's explanation:
Please note about the international cut: Cannon cut the original camera negative to match the theatrical version of the film. Any trims from the original camera negative were not saved. As a result, the international cut only exists as an interpositive film element. We felt cutting those scenes into the original camera negative for a UHD release would be jarring because of the increase in resolution of 2160p.
Not sure what kind of an explanation that is when Vinegar Syndrome produced THE BEASTMASTER in 4K UHD from similar elements and it looked good.
Either way, this one is an easy PASS. With scenes axed and some of Mancini's score along with it (this is the one with the tepid Michael Kamen/James Guthrie electronic rescore), I have no motivation to rewatch the Tri-Star version -- 4K or 1080p or any form.
Hopefully Arrow or someone overseas tries to compile the International Cut for 4K UHD. I'll save my $$ for that.
