Huh! I'll probably roll out for this for the sheer novelty (and any excuse to see Jaws on the big screen is welcome), but why release the film on September 3rd, when the summer's essentially over?
Yuck. Surprised Spielberg would sign off on that especially a silly, stupid 3D conversion where the cinematography will be downgraded to crappy muddy SunglassVision 3D.
As for the timing I'm sure it's because they know its commercial appeal is limited and can't/don't want to take the Imax theater space away from whatever Disney junk is going to occupy it during the prime summer weeks. That scheduling is usually broken down well in advance.

Do they crop 2.35 movies to 16:9 for Imax? Ive never been to a "regular" movie in an Imax theater.
I would certainly hope not! Anyways, both this and E.T. will have week-long runs, so I can enquire from people who see it before me how the tech presentations are handled.
E.T. is 1.85 so that would fit the parameters of a 16:9 IMAX screen better than JAWS. I don't know exactly what they do with the 2.35 ratio on Imax but when we get "Imax specifically shot scenes" on Blu-Rays and UHD's they are always configured for that 16:9 Imax ratio (I think it's like 1.90).
It's not the size of a 2.35 screen so I don't know what they do with something like JAWS -- either crop it, or show it with black borders on the top and bottom of the screen.
Well these rave reviews for the 3D conversion have me on the verge of going to check it out. Very few comments on the Imax by comparison but a huge screen is less compelling to me than a quality 3D presentation which has been unanimously praised for this and is something I can't get at home. Seeing as it will probably never be seen again outside this release I might go after all.
Had a $10 Showcase reward so between that and bargain Tuesday I paid 75 cents to see this.
And it's really well done. Like watching JAWS through a Viewmaster, and the amount of shots with elements in the foreground/background that contrast makes for a really vivid 3-D experience.
My main gripe is that I could tell the image was zoomed in. There was basically nobody there so I snapped a few pictures to compare with my 4K UHD when I got home, and sure enough, some of the frame was clipped on the top and bottom, and a smidge on the left side. Nothing crazy, but I know this movie inside and out, and it was immediately apparent to me a portion of the image was being cropped. I don't know how projection works these days and if this was something unique to my theater's projection, or every master that went out had this going on, but it bothered me a little.
Beyond that, though, I was happy I went to see it in this format (since it'll probably not be released at home), and as an excuse to see JAWS in a theater again. The fact that some of the backgrounds in the 3D version aren't as crisp or detailed as 4K -- due to its very nature where they bring elements IN focus in order to achieve a three-dimensional space -- means this would never compel me to pick this as a preference over the regular 2D version...but they did a good job.
Also did a good job enhancing the colors so the brightness reduction wasn't a problem at all once you put your Real 3D glasses on. The movie still looked like JAWS -- just in 3D -- which is probably the biggest compliment you can give to the team that worked on it.
