The Baron: The Feature Films (1966) – Imprint Television #10
He is known as The Baron… a man whose career is a crescendo of breathtaking thrills. He finds adventure through his business as an international art and antique dealer. It takes him into the webs woven by crime and avarice, and even into espionage. It’s a business that stirs the greed, vanity, envy and passions of men and women of many walks of life and many different countries. Often an undercover man for British Intelligence, The Baron knows the world and loves adventure. Master storyteller John Creasey created him, and Hollywood’s Steve Forrest portrays him, with help from his assistant Cordelia, played by British actress Sue Lloyd.

In 1966, ITC transformed four episodes from the series into two feature film versions: The Man in a Looking Glass and Mystery Island. Destined for European theatrical exhibition and having been shot on 35mm film, these two features have been restored and are presented in high-definition for the first time. Accompanying them are the four series episodes (Masquerade / The Killing and Storm Warning / The Island) which were the basis for the film versions, also in high-definition, and are presented in the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

Included with The Baron – The Feature Films is SUE LLOYD at ITC. The glamorous actress, who rose to stardom in the Harry Palmer thriller The Ipcress File, appeared in many of the ITC action series, and this high-definition release showcases her performances in Gideon’s Way, The Saint, Department S, and in an additional episode of The Baron.

Australian label Imprint Films has informed us that it is preparing a Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Sam Peckinpah's Convoy (1978), starring Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw, Ernest Borgnine, Burt Young, and Madge Sinclair. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 27.

Preliminary special features and technical specs are included on the press sheets below.

Kris Kristofferson stars as Martin 'Rubber Duck' Penwald, forced to go on the run after an encounter with corrupt Sheriff 'Dirty' Lyle Wallace (Ernest Borgnine). As other truckers hear the news, the decision is made to form a mile-long 'convoy', to take a stand against the abusive sheriff and the problematic 55mp/h speed limit. Teeming with explosive cargo, a highly public standoff escalates to a point of no return…

Also starring Ali MacGraw, Burt Young, Franklyn Ajaye and Madge Sinclair, this thrilling film was Peckinpah's most commercially successful venture. Although Peckinpah's rough cut was rejected by EMI and is now lost, we are proud to include a 115 minute Extended Cut on a bonus Blu-ray disc in our release, featuring five extra minutes of footage.

Our strictly Limited Edition 3-Disc Hardbox is jam-packed with brand NEW Special Features that delve into the history of this classic piece of film history with Peckinpah scholar Mike Siegel and expert contributors.

"Back in 1978, CONVOY was the very first Peckinpah film I ever saw, hence I have a soft spot in my heart for it. It was a very troubled production which gave me the opportunity to create hours of supplements to preserve its chaotic, interesting and even entertaining backstory for future generations. With the new 4K restoration, the extra footage and new supplements, this will be the ultimate home video release for CONVOY, for all time." - Mike Siegel

Prices are absurd. $250 Australian just for THE NEVERENDING STORY (about $170 USD)!

They likely will do a non-deluxe release with just the discs at some point. CONVOY was also announced for overseas and I can't imagine A BRIDGE TOO FAR wouldn't land from Kino (or someone) at some point.

Man, I miss the days when Deep Discount was selling Imprint titles for like $11 a pop (even lavish hardcase boxed sets like Alfie  )

Of all of those, that's the one that's probably worth importing since WB owns it here and is never going to release something that lavish. There will be releases of the others (well, maybe not PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT lol).

Imprint doesn't even send review product regularly anymore...I just had to order a bunch of 30% off titles from the JB Hifi page while figuring out how to enter a mobile phone it would accept (I dug out some old Blu-ray.com thread that recommended a generic Aussie phone like +61 04 1234 5678 -- and it worked, but only if I re-edited my street address!)

As much of a pain as it is, the discs are about $20 shipped right now (most of them). You can also email them once they ship to get the VAT refunded.

From the comments on the 4K FB groups, it doesn't look like Imprint will be offering a standard release for THE NEVERENDING STORY. Plenty of comments about the shipping costs. I'm concentrating on the ITC releases from Via Vision. Their packaging and turn around shipping time is pretty good, so I'm happy to pay the $45 to receive them. Next up, should be Man in A Suitcase, followed by The Baron: The Feature Films.

I don't know if their 4K licensing will be different than their Blu-Rays, but they've released "standard" versions of pretty much every big seller they've put out. I'm sure they'd be coy on this and try to sell as many units of the expensivo set as they can, but I'd expect they would put out a slimmed down package -- even if it's minus some of the extra features. (That happened with THE OSTERMAN WEEKEND)

As much as I enjoy a lot of their releases, Imprint's QC also tends to be all over the place -- it's not consistently excellent like Arrow or even close -- so that's a big investment to ask of consumers when you don't know how the transfer is going to turn out. Apparently the US cut only has Dolby Digital (lossy) sound which is another minus.

Either way I'm sure there will be fans who will buy it! Admittedly it's not a favorite movie of mine, and I "grew up with it".
