Re: LILO & STITCH - Yep, Another Disney Live-Action Remake
Looks like I'll be stuck seeing this one because Theo loves Stitch.
Admittedly, this looks less offensive than Snow White, as it's a shot-for-shot remake seemingly and Stitch looks exactly like he does in the animated movie -- it's not some photorealistic lions running amok. Even all the songs are from the original.
It was also conceived and went into production as a Disney+ movie so the low bar it's setting is probably due to that.

They are a blob. You can also argue what IP they've actually improved since they bought it. Lucasfilm? Nope. Marvel? Nope. The Muppets? Nope.
Still, to expand a bit on my last post, I'm predicting this movie is going to be a hit because it's:
a) a straight (apparently very straight) remake of the cartoon
b) isn't trying to clear any other hurdles because it was made for Disney+
c) kids love Stitch (Theo is more excited about this than the lame looking Thunderbolts)
d) family movies are some of the only profitable releases out there now, and there aren't enough of them
Checks most of the boxes SNOW WHITE didn't. They'll profit on this one.

That didn't seem to help Snow Brown.AndyDursin wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 11:42 am d) family movies are some of the only profitable releases out there now, and there aren't enough of them

No but it also didn't deliver on all those other elements and took the formula/story of its source and chucked it out the window.
TANGLED is on "indefinite hold"?? Nice!

‘Ohana” might still mean “family,” but this Lilo & Stitch deserves to be left behind—and forgotten.

Too bad it'll make a billion dollars and reignite the live-action remake machine after Snow White temporarily shut it down.

"Ohana means giving up custody so you can go to college."
This is as horrific as the 2022 Zemeckis Pinocchio ending with the title character NOT turning into a real boy.

That's kind of whacked out.
What isn't is the amount of $$ this will make -- which I'm not surprised by, Stitch is one of Disney's biggest mascots of the last several decades and the kids love him. The movie may suck but they love the character so it'll end up turning a huge profit. I mean, walking around Disney World last month was ALL Stitch merch EVERYWHERE. Nothing from FROZEN and that was all over the place the last time we were there.
Up next: more "budget conscious" Disney+ remakes on the big screen...but they'll again miss the bigger picture this is making $$ because kids love the character.

As much money as it makes, it'll be utterly forgotten within two years, like the live-action Lion King, which made $1.6 BILLION, and yet when was the last time you saw Disney merch with the CGI Lion King character designs on it? Same thing with 2019's Aladdin, where you saw a scattering of merch with the movie characters for that summer and that summer alone, and every time I've seen the characters on a package of diapers or whatever, it's always their friendly, hand-drawn animated versions, because those kind, emotive faces are what kids respond to. Meanwhile, here's the terrifying Jumba and Pleakley from the new Lilo & Stitch...

I feel this is a little different because Stitch has a much bigger merch level potential and they didnt screw his design or anything else up in regards to the character itself which is all the kids care about.
Like, this movie has a really low bar to clear and while it may suck, the target audience isnt going to care. S

Hey, I'm sure the ankle-biters will be pleased, but when they grow up (hell, when they hit their late-teens), they'll look back at these live-action remakes and realize how awful they are compared to the originals. What's sadder is a lot of kids will see these first.

In a way, the millennials already got their version of these live action remakes: the endless line of Disney direct-to-video sequels that children might have enjoyed when they were young, but most of them now seem like embarrassing wastes of time.Monterey Jack wrote: ↑Fri May 23, 2025 8:49 pm Hey, I'm sure the ankle-biters will be pleased, but when they grow up (hell, when they hit their late-teens), they'll look back at these live-action remakes and realize how awful they are compared to the originals. But it is true, these live action remakes are most unnecessary and most, aside from the 1996 101 Dalmatians and the 2015 Cinderella, are also of very poor quality.
