Queen Elizabeth hosting drive-in cinema on her Sandringham estate
Move over Queen Latifah!
Another queen is bringing movies to the masses.
Amid the Covid-19 crisis, Queen Elizabeth II has announced that Sandringham Country Park, located on her lavish 20,000-acre Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, will feature drive-in movies later this month.
The 94-year-old royal matriarch’s countryside retreat will host a makeshift drive-in theatre for one weekend in September, with screenings of a variety of films ranging from 2018’s A Star is Born to last year’s World War I epic 1917.
A series of family-friendly blockbusters such as Toy Story, The Greatest Showman and Moana are also on the lineup, along with musical films such as Grease, the Elton John biopic Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody about Freddie Mercury and Queen.
The drive-in screenings will take place on the estate from September 25-27, with three daily showtimes. Tickets are £32.50, or NZ$64.50.
With social distance measures in place, the estate said: “Enjoy your favourite movie from the comfort of your car in the wonderful setting of Sandringham Country Park. We have selected some great street food vendors to join us at each performance.”
For filmgoers who want to be more comfortable, upgrades to add deck chairs, tables, concessions and separate areas to the side of their vehicles are also available.
Sandringham, where the royal matriarch spends winter holidays, is roughly 100 miles north of London.
Like all of the royal palaces, Sandringham Estate is open to the public, although the coronavirus crisis has brought on some new changes.
According to published reports, the Queen and her husband, Prince Phillip, are currently residing at Balmoral Estate in Scotland.
