48 HOURS Blu-Ray Remaster (And ANOTHER 48 HOURS) From Paramount in June

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

A much-needed remaster of 48 HOURS is lined up along with the format debut of the lousy 1990 sequel.

Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte push the limits of both action and comedy in the acclaimed classics 48 HRS. and ANOTHER 48 HRS., arriving separately on Blu-ray in the Paramount Presents line July 6, 2021 from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Both films have been newly remastered from 4K film transfers and are presented with new bonus content featuring insight from director Walter Hill along with vintage behind-the-scenes footage to look back at the making of his high-octane classics. This is the Blu-ray debut of ANOTHER 48 HRS. The limited-edition Paramount Presents Blu-ray Discs™ come in collectible packaging featuring a foldout image of each film’s theatrical poster and an interior spread with key movie moments. The discs also include access to a digital copy of the film along with the theatrical trailer. Special features on each disc are detailed below:

48 HRS.

· Filmmaker Focus: Director Walter Hill on 48 HRS.

· Theatrical Trailer

· Space Kid—original 1966 animated short, which makes an appearance in the film

ANOTHER 48 HRS.

· Filmmaker Focus: Director Walter Hill on ANOTHER 48 HRS.

· Theatrical Trailer

48 HRS. Synopsis

Nick Nolte is unforgettable as Jack Cates, a rough-edged Inspector on the hunt for two vicious cop-killers. Unlikely ride-along con Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy), is given 48-hour leave from prison to help Cates on the case. The laughs fly almost as much as the punches, as both men pursue two very different goals in a short amount of time.

ANOTHER 48 HRS. Synopsis

Eight years after the first 48 hours of mayhem, Reggie (Murphy) is about to be released from the pen. But, after the bus transporting him flips over (17 times), Inspector Jack Cates (Nolte) enlists the ex-con for another seemingly impossible two-day task to nail an elusive drug lord with a price on Reggie’s head.

Shame they couldn't have unearthed the 150+ minute(!) cut of Another 48 Hrs., as it was supposedly cut to the bone.

Now, can we get the theatrical cut of The Warriors...?

It was probably cut to the bone because it sucked. I just doubt more of that movie would've made it better. Paramount probably just decided to cut their losses with it, pack in a few more showings, ride Murphy's popularity at the time (the film is a typical vanity project of his from that era) and call it a day.

Paramount would be smart to do THE WARRIORS as a Paramount Presents remaster or 4K UHD. Movie has a healthy cult following and everyone would rather have the theatrical cut. In the meantime there's always the German disc, or the streaming version!

Just watched 48 HOURS movie two nights ago. The parts that never worked still don't work (Nolte's abrupt friendly change towards Murphy's character, Nolte's relationship with his girlfriend, the concept of police backup which would have most likely brought the proceedings to a close a lot quicker), but the parts that do still work nicely. Perhaps it stuck out a little more how unlikely it is that 100 lb Murphy would be able to stand toe to toe with Nolte in a fist fight. One can't have everything in a movie.

I saw this back in the day in a Saturday afternoon matinee double feature paired with RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. I want to say that this was Summer 1982. Middle-aged me was struck by how old this movie (and thus myself) is now. When I saw this back in 1982, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS was in the ball park for being just as old in 1982. Why do I find this so troubling?

Tell me about it. Raiders Of The Lost Ark is almost as old today as Casablanca was when Raiders originally hit theaters,

It's funny, this movie set a standard for its genre with a very modern approach to action and comedy -- even more than, say, something like a Wilder/Pryor SILVER STREAK type of vehicle -- yet at the same time, parts of it don't work. It's very much "empty calories" that isn't developed enough to make a big impression.

When it came out on Blu last month, I tried showing to my wife, who had never seen it (or didn't remember it), and we watched half before she fell asleep. She wasn't moved to finish it either, which is why it's kind of a movie that "broke ground" in terms of its style but doesn't really hold up all that well -- probably because the film itself wasn't quite as good as people thought at the time. Definitely entertaining still, but not a classic.

Admittedly I also have an indifferent reaction to most of Walter HIll's output as a director, THE WARRIORS excepted.
