ETERNALS Set to Be Worst Reviewed Marvel Production

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

If the Kool aid drinking critics who typically gush over every one of these things don't like it, then beware indeed....

I'm not surprised. This has all been way past well run into the ground.

I was never impressed with THE ETERNALS storyline in the comics. If there was a compelling enough story to tell and it was done well, then I could perhaps overlook the overt woke-friendly casting choices. I guess we'll have to see. "Phase 5" or whatever the hell phase they're in seems to be off to a lukewarm and unimpressive start. People can say what they will about the Infinity storyline and how it played out, but overall it worked despite some weak movies in the mix.

I was nearly blasted off of Facebook last year by hundreds of fan-tards for suggesting that the Marvel Universe would have been better under the Paramount banner than with Disney - for mainly the same reasons we have been pointing out. The edginess, risk-taking, and diversity of directors that they would have used would have given a less prosaically manufactured look and feel to the end result. From what I've read, I got the impression that there was a more reciprocally collaborative environment with Marvel Management and Paramount on those Paramount-Marvel Phase 1 from directors (Favreau, Johnston, Brannagh, and even Whedon). Brannagh may have felt overwhelmed, but he did bring some style to it in the form of those offbeat camera angles and working with a fairly engaged cast. Even though those were the early first movies into the series, there WAS room for nuance. More importantly, there was room for more of it. Perhaps someone at Paramount or Marvel at that point was trying to replicate Columbia/Sony's success with SPIDERMAN. Overall, I was more pleased with the outcome of those movies (even the much berated S3) than the uneven X-MEN series from FOX. Although, what I liked about some of those movies was that kind of edginess, especially in some of the performances. While the MCU has had it's good moments, it is and feels like product on a release schedule.

I don't think the fan-tards understood what I was getting at and perhaps, I could not articulate what I meant to some of these teens and twenty-somethings. But it looked like the older people "got" it. The DISNEY Star Wars era on steroids really emphasizes this problem.

You said it Ed. The Marvel movies are like the new religion for young social media peddlers and associated fanboys.
While the MCU has had it's good moments, it is and feels like product on a release schedule.
Just like a TV series that plays in theaters -- very much in every way. They even slot these ahead of time with generic "Marvel movie" dates designated years in advance, then the actual film gets listed later on!

It would be interesting to see what would've happened minus COVID to these -- I would've expected a big drop regardless of the shrinking marketplace because the "sizzle" is fading from the series as a whole. Like you mentioned with ETERNALS Ed, they're getting into secondary characters and comic books that weren't nearly as popular as the big Marvel heroes. They also are investing much more in their woke/diversity hires, cast and crew, than seemingly cultivating the screenplays and quality of the actual product on-screen. I can't imagine they can't see that, but at this point, the Marvel movies are SO formula, it scarcely matters who directs them.
