5-25-77 Finally Released After 20 Years In Production

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Director Patrick Read Johnson got to see a rough cut of STAR WARS back in 1977 when he was a teenager, and ended up making a semi autobiographical account of it in a movie called 5-25-77 that was shot in 2002.

The movie was never released for a variety of reasons -- it was shown here and there at various festivals over the last 5-10 years after he mostly got it completed. Now after two decades it's coming out on Blu-Ray next week (I have a review copy but have yet to watch out).

Interesting article on its crazy production history:

Hope it's better than September 30, 1955!

But seriously, it looks interesting, but I have to say the trailer is overlong and a little frenetic -- yet at the same time doesn't impart a clear impression of what kind of movie it really is.

Yes I hope it's more disciplined than his 4 hour rough cut probably was!

Gary Kurtz was a producer on this, and Douglas Trumbull and Richard Yuricich are listed as "visual consultants".

I also hope it's better than FANBOYS, another indie comedy about Star Wars fans that the Weinsteins bought and hacked up. I used to confuse the two projects!
