Oscars 26: SINNERS Becomes The Most Decorated Film EVER MADE

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

No sign of how irrelevant film is becoming is more glaring than the fact Ryan Coogler's OK-but-not-great SINNERS has broken the ALL TIME OSCAR RECORD of 16 nominations.

16! For SINNERS!! A movie that turns into a stupid bloodbath of vampire movie cliches!

Man if FRIGHT NIGHT were made now it would've gotten at least 17, possibly 18...

I was muted on Sinners, although I think it is a better film than One Battle After Another out of this year's options or lack thereof..... But I kind of feel as though Sinners lucked out by coming along in a year where there really were not many viable contenders in many of the tech categories, but also because it was one of the few films that had any staying power. I don't think it would have received so many nominations if the October-December corridor of releases was filled with so many films that failed to launch.

Like so many other "Oscar darlings" from the past two decades, no one will remember Sinners in five years.

Does anyone remember Coda? (Did anyone see Coda)?

"I would have voted for Sinners in seventeen categories if I could!"

Yes, I did see Coda. Kind of felt like a CBS or ABC movie of the week peppered with a bit more suggestive language. It had its heart in the right place though, so I can't fully dismiss it.

Fair enough. But gone are the days of Best Picture Winners which are iconic, and timeless -- like Lawrence of Arabia, The Godfather, Amadeus or Unforgiven.

That is true. I don't think that, despite seeing nearly all of them, many of the Oscar films of the last 20 years, or frankly many films from the last 20 years in general, will endure. That is why I will watcha film made before 2000 90% of the time.

Long, long gone! No doubt about it. But that's because movies themselves have lost their relevance to many. They are no longer the pop-culture cornerstone they once were...I mean, how many times do you talk to someone about the movies and they go, "I haven't been to a movie in years". This most recent AVATAR movie has literally nobody talking unless you're a fan who posts in some Avatar group on Reddit.

CODA is a very likeable little movie and probably the best one of these recent winners but even it is a remake of a French film...it wasn't some semi-autobiographical piece rooted in someone's background. Having been relegated to Apple+ it probably had the least visibility of all of them but I liked it (and the lead girl was very appealing which helped).

Either way, the Oscars are headed to Youtube, which tells you everything about what's going on.

Michael B. Jordan Best Actor? Hilarious. I didn't think EITHER of his performances were any good.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a done deal yet. But it is true that none of the best actor nominated performances have a groundswell of passionate support behind them.

Oh well. My only real wishes for this year's Oscars are that Amy Madigan wins for her chilling performance in Weapons, which made that film, and that surly Sean Penn does not win his third Oscar.

I don't care about the Oscars but I do love the YouTube channel Moviewise which has put out a few videos recently about the Best Picture and Director nominees. There are spoilers involved. He likes Sinners as a movie but points ou some major flaws in its direction.

I highly recommend this channel as this guy does a great job of showing exactly what good directing is.

The Disney cross-promotional shilling was off the charts this year. My God.
